AN AMUSING TRICK. —The latest in door amusement is termed the "printer's delight," and is performed iu the following manner: Take a sheet of note paper, fold it carefully, and inclose a bank note suf ficiently large to pay up arrears, and a year in advance. And what adds im mensely to the feat, is to send along the name of a new subscriber "with cash ,to balance." Keep your eye on the printer, and if you detect a smile, the trick is a success. Try it. It appears the aforesaid was stopping at the ' 'rraveler's Rest" and had sold a harm, for which he received the amount he alleges has been stolen from him. From the evidence in the case, Wagner was so much intoxicated that he was taken to the stable to sleep neff his load," and on coming to him self found he was minus the price of the horse. CORRECTION.—A few weeks ago, in noticing the , report of President Muhlen berg, of Mublenberig College, made to the Pennsylvania Synod, we expressed our surprise at a proposition to transfer the funds of the German Professorship in Pennsylvania College to Muhlenberg Col lege. We were surprised at the prapcisi tion, because of Piot Muhlertberg's thor ough acquaintance with the ;Oahu of the funds, and the proposition to transfer them was utterly inconsistent with the reputation of Prof. M. as a gentleman of high-toned honor and integrity. We are glad to be informed that the official report of the proceedings, as they appeared in the papers, did Prof. Muhlenberg injus tice in that it ignored the , essential fact that the proposition to transfer was based on - the contingency of Pa. College first surrendering its claims to the funds, in any negotiations between the College and the Synod. We make this explanation as an act justice to Prof. M. SWINDLERS.—A week or two ago a stranger hired a horse and ° buggy from a livery stable in the upper part of Cum portend county, for the purpose of going Into .the country a short distance. No trace 'of the horse and buggy could be found until the 13th inst., when the Hano ver'Citizen states it was ascertained that the horse and buggy had been sold to Mr. Houser, in New Oxford, for 195.00 and a watch, the latter valued at about *25. The property was taken possession of by the owner, leaying Mr. Houser minus 112,00. The thief made good his escape. The Citizen further states that a young man who had been working in the neigh borhood of New Oxford for some time, but otherwise a stranger, called on Mr. Houser on Saturday last for the loan of a horse and buggy for a few hours to take a ride into the country. The horse and buggy were given, but the borrower forgot to return them. Mr. Houser re covered his horse and buggy in York. - VALTIBgE RECIPE.—The Ohio Ottlli valor says the following recipe in worth one thousand 'dollars to every housekeep er : "Take one pound of sal soda and half a pound of unranked lime and put them, in a gallon of water, boil twenty minutes, let it stand till cool, then drain of and put In a strudi jug or jar; soak your dirty clothes over night, or until they are wet through, then wring them; and OA plenty of sow, and with water, add one tea-cup ful of the washing fluid : boil half an hour or more, rinse, and your clothes will look better than by the old way of washing twice before boiling. Such legacies are counted honorable, and be:; ter monuments than those of braes or atone, uni indeed they are! In this way these Institutions, already richly endowed, are supplied with most adequate means to secure the objects of their establlshment.—, Why is there none of this spirit in our town and county? Here is Pennsylvania College in our Midst, an honor to the community, and a blessing to the &ateand land, and a con tinual source of *revenue, in many ways, to our immediate community. Many sons of Gettysburg and Adams county, who are honoring their birth, and to whom out citi zens point with admonition and pride, re ceived their education at Pennsylvania Col lege, and there received the stimulus and power to become what they are. 5 And yet how often is this I3enefactressre membeied by our people , in their wills?— Can you recall any legacies left her by our own citizens? Not long ago you chroni cled the death of a citizen, who had no near or dependent relatives, and, who strangely had made no will; and yet his property is valued at tens of thousands ! Why didn't he think of Pennsylvania Col lege as a blessing to the community and give her means to be a greater one ? As I look around, I see. one and another, here and there among ,us, who have means, more or less, and who will not be among us very long. Will they let me suggest to them to do somethitig before they die which will live and bless mankind after they are gone ? Would they perpetuate their names ? Let them engrave it on minds and hearts rather than on marble or granite! Did their means cost them labor and self-denial? Why then leave it to those who will squan der it with as little care as it cost them to gather it, .. or who will neither enjoy it themselves nor let any one else reap its benefits ? Let me recommend the Trustees of Pennsylvania College as good custodians of the people :s funds, as those who will use what is committed to them in a way which will bless and not harm our community ! Remember this Institution in your wills— unless you prefer a better way of being your own Executor, and, like Peabody, seeing your benevolerree,..inaugurated in modes of doing good! Our College re cently purchased a first class Telescope, which does the students no good because the Institution has no means to mount it.— We haie;smong us individuals and families whr, might build an Observatory, to meet the want ; and may I suggest that this would be a more notable and, at the same time, useful monument than any they will ever get at Ever-Green Cemetery or in any other grave yard ! THE BERT.—Tonics have of late years gained rapidly In public estimation, and are far titre generally employed by first-class physicians than they once were. The rea son for this is that it is a generally establish ed fact that wholesome tonics used to mod eration daily for years do not loose their virtue, neither do they injure the system.— They act in fact like air and exercise, and not Its o'''medicin,es," which are intended solely for attacks , of illness. The RITTER perecteitcs, especially those of vegetable origin, all possess the common property of stimulating the appetite, strengthening the nervous system, mil of imparting strength. Women generally thrive benefit from them even mere.than met', their system being more liable to debility and exhaustion.— We have again and wain in our experience seen the good effects of tonics where the eyes had grown dim EU id the cheeks pale, and the entire frame showed every indica tion of exhaustion, nervous suffering and debility. The best established bitters before the American public are bey and question those of Dr. Stcever, and this vs equivalent to de claring that they are the best, since among the scores of really exce'llent bitters now current, a poor article it as no chance of success whatever.
