Gentkrneft—l cannot resist the tempta
tion to offer my testimony - to the troth of
the docuine you lay down in this extract
from your issue ofJune 4th:
tirgil'Hagman :i.Heraid - csdniates that
re artnet* of ;Washington exiguity qolit a
half million of dollars by withholding their
crop of last year from market last fall. The
policy of "waiting for a rise," is always a
doubtthl and dangerous one, and is never
'advisable, except where war or special
causes are disturbing commercial relations.
When we consider the loss from shrinkage,
from waste, from depredation, the Increased
labor of re-handling, and the lug of the use
of the money, it is-much to be doubted
whether "holding crops" from market after
they are ready is, as a rule, sound policy
for the producers. _
I was myself for many years at pioduce
dealer; so were my father and grand-father
&afar back as 1786. - All the experience and
observation of our house tend to establish
the rule, thiit farmers who regularly get out
their grain as soon as they can, and sell as
soon as they have Merely for market, pros
'perfar beyond those who "hold for a
- rise;" and so far as millers and merchants
are concerned, the fact is almost without ex
ception, that while those who avoid specu
lation accumulate wealth, surely though
slowly, the large class who "make haste to
get riches," fail sooneror later, and general
ly pretty soon in their career—the difference
between the farmer speculating on his own
produce, tend the miller or merchant specu
lating on the property of others, being that
the former stays poor, while the latter bring
ruin on themselves and others.
Besides the reasons indicated in your para
graph yon might have:instanced (though it
is included in fact under the head of "waste"
or "depredation,'') the loss caused by rats,
insects and Other- . vermine,"Which L is far
greater than is usually supposed ; also the
danger of grain getting wet, or heating or
sprouting, or becoming otherwise deterior
ated from the actfon of the elements. There
is also the risk of fire, or the expense and
trouble of insurance.
It is notorious that many farmers, shrewd
enough to estimate the losses and risks in
cident to holding grain, are simple enough !
to endeavor to avoid them by attiring their
grain with millers and merchants. They
hook the consignee for all the responsibili
ties, and while they are waiting for it rise,
the consignee, who perhaps is speculating
for a decline, beComes insolvent, and the
farmers suffer. •
shave often been provoked by the advice
in agricultural papers,"copled by the coun
try press and spread wide cast throughout
the country, "to hold for better prices."
There was a good deal of this last fall.—
Laying out of the question that the author
of such advice is probably himself a gambler
iu bread-stuffs, looking and aiming ex
clusively at his own interests, consider how
unlikely it is that any apeculatlye recom
mendations published in a newspaper should
be trustworthy. Consider that grain is pro
duced all over the world, and consumed
all over the world. When : one c r op fails,
say wheat, another crop, say corn, succeeds,
and when all fail in ohe country or one lati
tude, in others there is abundance and to
spare. However desirous speculators may
be to ascertain the condition of crops over
all the world, and to measure the capacity
of needy nations to purchase, Me problem
is simply beyond their calculation. The
coolest, beat informed, and most experi
enced merchant is no more able to form a
reliable judgment a month ahead, than the
most ignorant plow boy. I once heard a
very w ise (because unapeculative) merchant,
who bad watched forrnany yess the maneu
vres of apeoulators, say, that a good rule
in bread-stuffs was this :--first, form the
best judgment in your power as to the
course of the market, and then act on just
the opposite conclusion.
The bad counsellors whose pretension to
prophetic spirit is so futile, appeal to the
prejudices of producers, by suggesting that
specidators combine to keep down prices
just after harvest, with a view to rapid pro
fits on an advancing market. The fact is
that there are always about as many specu
lators looking for a future decline as for a
future advance ; the former sell for future de-
livery, the latter buy for future sale. There
is always this contrariety of opinion. The
operator is generally mysterious, and often
means the opposite of what he says. But
somehow the market is kept tolerably steady
between the bolls and bears; and prices on
the whole advance or recede, as time de-
volops supply and demand, pretty much as
they would do if there were no wiseacres to
forecast the future either way.
I cannot conclude what has become a
much longer dissertation than I intended,
without a remark, which any one will verify
who has had much opportunity for ebserva-
lion. It is this, that when the holder for an
advance seem the limit he had fixed upon
within his reach, he seldom has the wisdom
and sell-control cicise the sale. He be
I comes excited us prices rise, and Is mare
disposed to hold on after they exceed his ex-
pectstioss, than he was when they were
down. And vine versa, when grain has
run down very low, the holder becomes
more (limp - sled with every decline; and the
chances arc that after holding through a
high market, the wise farmer will sell a
last at 11w lowest point. P. G. S.

CHERRY PECTORAL,
For Diseases of the Throat and Lungs,
such as Coughs, Colds, Whooping
Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma,
and- Consumption.
Probably never before In the whole history of medi

the confidence of mankind, as this excellent remedy
for pulmonary couiplaints. Through a long series of
years, and among most of the races cf men it has risen
higher and higher in their estimation, as it has be
come better known. Its uniform character and pow
er to care the various affections of the Inoga and
throat, have made it known as a reliable protector
against them. While adapted to milder forms of dis
ease and to young children, it Is at the same tiruothe
most effectual remedy that can be given fur incipient
consumption, aul the dangerous affections of the
throat and lunge. As a provision against sudden at
tacks of Croup, It should be kept on hand In every
family, and indeed as all are sometimes subject to
colds andcoughs, all should be provided S 1 ith this an
tidote for them.
Although settled Consurapii , n Is thought Incurable,
still great numbers of cases where the disease seemed
settled, have been e. , mpletely cured, and the patient
restored to sound health by the Cherry Pectoral. $o
