ACCIDENT.—Mr. Frank Hamburg of
Chambersburg, who was working at the
Katalysirie hotel building near this place,
fell from the cupola to the roof of the
main building on the 14th lust., and was
.considerably injured.
SIGNBD.—We understand that Gov.
Geary has approved the bill passed by the
last legislature relative to the Bounty Mix
in Cumberland township. The bill was
published in full in a recent number of the
STAN-AND SENTINEL.
ARRESTED.-Wm. Wordy, charged
with malicious mischief at a wake in this
county, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff
James Hann and officer Rouzer, last week
near Hughes's Furnace, and brought to
this place. lie was admitted to bail in the

SAILED FOR EUROPE.—Dr, John A.
Swope of Baltitnore, son of George Swope,
Esq., of this place, sailed fawn Baltimore
for Europe on Wednesday of this week.
We regret to hear that his health is seri
ously impaired, and hope it may be re

A new frame building is about beiugerec
ted at the' National Orphans' Homestead,
in front of the Sollool House. It will be
31 x 43, three stories (two stories frame
and French Roof,) and is. to be finished
about the -Ist of August. Stallsmith and
Son aro the contractors.
RECEIVED.—A very valuable dia
mond ring, stolen in Cincinnati about
three months ago from a wealthy citizen,
was traced to this county, and recovered
a few days ago by officer Rouzer, whose
assistanne was invoked but a few days be
fore. The ring is valued at $6OO, and con
tains 24. diamonds. It cvas returned to the
owner by Adams' Express on Wednesday
morning last.
QUICK WORK.—David Culp, of this
place, one of the plasterers at the liataly
sine Spring Hotel, a few days ago, put the
second coat on a room 15 feet long, 10 feet
wide and 9 feet high, containing 40 yards
of plastering, in the almost incredibly
short time cf 6 minutes and 20 seconds,
by the watch 1 In doing so, he was assia
ted by G. Hoff who "dorbied and straight
•edged" the Mortar which Mr. Culp put on

who gave their names as Justin W. Beibe
and James itt. Ireland were arrested here
on %Vodue•day morning, charged with

Bailee and frociaci . have been in this
rieightsoriumul Cur nearly throe weeks, and
have behaved suspiciously. They are
young men, generally drove a span of
black horses, in an open buggy,
and pretended to be dealing In Patent
rights. Their detection and arrest are
.greatly to the credit of the gentlemen en
gaged in it. They will be tried at the
August Court, third Monday.

letter dated the 26th :of 'April. 1868, it
shows that a draft of t3OO was sent by - the
agents and appropriated by Levi Miller,
of Fountaludale, Adams county, Pa., in
stead of going to Levi - Miller, of Pine
- Grove, Pa. The prisoner on receipt of the
ditift opened a correspondence and subse
quently- received two remittances of 1f.16.-
05each.. The first draft of 3300 he seder
ed.thenioneY upon by forging the names
of the endorsers, at a banking house in
this city, the second and third wore paid
at the counter of the First National Bank, I
of ‘Vaynesboro,' Pa. -
In the meantime several letters have
boot written, by Miller and the agents, in
reference to the lands sold and to be sold
and purchased. The owner of the money
.had had for some time suspicions of a
leak somewhere, and became convinced
of the fraud being practiced on correspon
ding with his agents. On learning that
letters had been intercepted they gave no
tice to the Post Office Department at
Washington, and Mr. P. Depro was de
tailed to trace the matter up. On the 2Gth
ult., lie commenced his search and pro
ceeded at once to Greencastle, Pa. Lie
there found that a forged acknowledg
ment had been taken before a Notary Pub
lic of that place, which was made in order
secure t 4 :1000 yet to be paid on the lands
in the hands of the agents. After obtain
ing this information and finding that the
draft had been cashed by the 9th National
Bank of New York, which came from this
city, he took the cars fur Williamsport,
arriving here ou the evening of the sth
inst. Learning- from Messrs. Sanders &
to., that they had cashed a draft in No
vember last, ho visited the Post Office,
and, in less than two hours had the sus
pected individual in his custody. We are
Informed that it was officer Stryker who
assisted in making the arrest here. As
before stated in the Bulletin, he was com
mitted to the Grey Eagle, , to board with
Sheriff Piatt.• We have rumors that he has
acknowledge to other and larger forger
ies, but we cannot vouch for their correct-

ENIMITSBURG ITEMS.—David Gam
ble, Esq., has recently entered into the
manufacture of brick, in company with
Robert 3.lellhenny, at the old stand On the
"Gamble farm," half mile from town,
now owned by Eli - Horner. Mr. Gamble
is an old hand at the business, having fol
lowed it for 22 years. This yard, In connec
tion with that of John Bell, will put up a
large number of brick during the sum
mer, to supply the demand which has re
cently sprung up In Emmitsburg.
The election for School Trustees, held
on the Ist inst., resulted in the election of
Dr. J. T. Bussey and Isaac Ryder. The
opposing candidates were the present in-

tion was held. The Republicans put a

and Henry Stokes, all Democrats, receiv

law. The Democrats have controlled the
Corporation for years, and the Republi
cans feel considerably elevated over their
victory. "Lower Taxes" is the motto of
the otlicers just cleated.
Mr. Joseph Culbertson has rented his I
large Woolen Factory to his sops, John
Q. and Samuel Culbertson, who will con
tinue the extensive trade established by
their father, who is now closing up his old
business. -
Mr. Daniel Sheets. recently from Adams
county, Pa., has opened a lumber yard.
