old, for $ll5. The following week Dr.
TATE sold this same colt to Iseec Woon-
LTG of Selinsgrove, for $l5O. It is a
large, fine and symmetrical colt, and was sired
by the thorough-bred horse "Cashier."
STILL THEY COME.—The last Com
piler announces three addional candidates
for county offices, "subject to the decision
of the Democratic County Convention,"—
Wru. C— Rock, of Reading for Register
and Recorder ; R. C. Swope, Hamilton
ban, for sheriff; and Levi Schwartz, of
Mountpleasant, Cot' Director of the Poor.
This makes thirteen already announced,
with more coming. _
BORDER DAMAGES.—A Convention
has been called to meet in Chambersburg
on Monday, June 1, at 1 o'clock, P. M., to
devise measures by which concerted and
effective_ action may be taken by all the
border counties, in order that compensa
tion for losses sustained may be secured.
Our Franklin county neighbors are mov
ing in44}e right direction, concertedly and
in earnest. Would it not be well for the
Adams county claimants to do likewise—
at least, take steps to be represented in - the
Chambersburg convention?
LAMP EXPLOSION.—A coal oil lamp
exploded in the store of Wm. McSherry at
White Hall, in this county, on the night of
the 4th inst., about eleven o'clock. Mr.
McSherry was about closing up his store,
and turned the .lamp down a little and
".then blew at it to blow it out, when the
flame-seemed
_to run down in the lamp,
:and it exploded, making a tremendous
report; and scattering the burning fluid
.over the floor and &tinter. Mr. McSher
ry succeeded in extinguishing the flames
, without sustaining much. damage.—Pre.ss.
ELECTIONS.—On the Ist inst., the fol
lowing gentlemen were elected officers of
the Littlestown Building Association:
President—lsaac Staub.
Vice President—Levi D. Maus.
Directors—Henry Klein, Henry Rainer,
I. H. Al Hier, Jacob Hornberger, Simon
S. Bishop.

EAGLE SHOT.—On the 3d inst., Le

mer, Esq., of Tyrone township, shot an
Rig,le, with, white head and black cap,
which measured 5 feet 11 inches between
the tips.of the wings, And two feet from
,the bill to the tail.
Mr. Hummer has also been succes7shl
in catching Weasels. On the 24th ult., he
.captured a female Weasel with seven
young ones. His dog killed three of the
latter. The other four, with the mother,
were taken alive, and are still in Hum
mer's possession, having become quite
tame. He bas since captured , three other
Weasels, making eleven in all.
DR. MORRIS ON THE BEE.—Rev.
Dr. Moanis, of Baltimore, who by - special
appointment of the Board of Trustees,
has been delivering a seri' - Lectures
in Pennsylvania college 1.... -sutural His
tory, delivered a public lecture in Christ's
Church on Thursday evening last, before
a large audience, on the ,Honey Bee, ac
companied by diagrams and illustrations.
We need scarcely say that it was an inter
esting lecture, the subject being one of
peculiar interest, and besides Dr. Moanis
has rare capacity as a popular lecturer—
few men having equal tact in so judici
ously mingling abstract scientific truths
with every-day illustrations and pertinent
anecdote, as to relieve the tedidm of the
hour.
S t SCHOOL EXHIBITIOg.—The Ex
hibition of the Methodist -Episcopal Sab
bath School in Agricultural Hall, on Fri
-
..day night, was a decided success. The
hall was crowed with old and young, and
nothwithstanding that the exercises were
protracted through three hours, they
were judiciously varied, so as to keep up
the interest to the close. The exhibition
was repeated—at Saturday night, with
_some changes in the prOgrairune,theltten
dance being again large. We should sup
pose the receipts netted a handaihne sum
to the school, and will go far to compen
sate the officers and teachers for the labor
and: patience requisite in getting, up
such an exhibition, besides gratifying the
little ones.
EXCURSION.—Quite a number of
young folks, on Tuesday evening, went
to Hanover in a special train, with the
ladies'and gentlemen who had engaged to
_give a tioneert in that place, the excur
sionistilkiling two large passenger cars.
The p/DlPO ttne of the c on cert hid been

RAILROAD MOVENIENTEL—We no
ticeby the*Washington papers that a dele
gation consisting of MC Loatz, President
of the Frederick and rennaylvania Line
Railroad Company, and other citizens of
Frederick, Md., were in the former city
last week, to consult prominent citizens
in regard to building a railroad line from
Washington to Lake Erie, by way of
Frederick. Resolutions were adopted by
the meeting approving of the proposed line
between Washington and Frederick, and
in favor of securing a charter from Con
gress authorizing its construction. A
Committee was also appointed to solicit
subscriptions for an experimental survey
from Frederick to the Northwest. There
is some difference of opinion as to the
route from Frederick North. The pres
ent line laid down by the Frederick' and
Pennsylvania Line road looks to Littles
town as the point of connection. Em
mitsburg , however, is moving to have the
line located to that place, with ultimate ex
tension -to Gettysburg, ..11arrisburg,
while another interest favors striking the
Pennsylvania line further west, in the
direction of Buffalo and Lake Erie.
LOCAL LEGISLATION.—Among the
local bills passed at the last session of the
Legislature, is one entitled :
"An act to regulate medical practice in
the counties of York, Adams, Perry,
Juniata, Indiana, Elk, Bucks, Northamp
ton and Lehigh." It imposes a
. fine of
from one hundred to five hundred dollars
upon any person who shall commence or
continue in the practice of medicine or
surgery who is not a graduate of some
chartered medical college, or who has
not been in continuous regular practice
for eight years. It also requires transient
pracitioners to appear before the clerk of
the courts, and prove that the above con
ditions have been complied with, and, also
to take out a license for one year by pay
ing a license fee for the use of the county,
of two hundred dollars.
All non-graduates who have not
been already in regular practice eight
years will have to suspend, while in future
none but graduates can commence busi
ness. Sharp that, and doubtless intended
to do away with quacks—but how about
graduates without brains? A diploma
ought to guaranty the possession of brains,
but unfortunately it don't.
GOOD TEMPLAR.S.—A Good Templars
Lodge was organized at Bendersville, Jan.
25th, with ten Members, since which time
it has increased gradually, and now, at be
ginning of 2d quarter, numbers

bers. This Lodge is composed of good
material and the membership are earnest in
the work of reform; The following are
the officers installed by T. U. Helnard D.
G.-W. C. T. at the beginning of the pres
ent quarter.

APPOINTMENTS.-31x. Scum., the
newly appointed I:. S. Assessor for this
district, took possession of the office on
yesterday.—We understand that he has
determined to retain the four existing sub
districts in the county, and has appointed
the following as his assistants John M.
Krauth, Esq., of Gettysburg for the first ;
William King of New Oxford, for the sec
ond ; William S. Cart, of Dienallee, for the
third ; and Cyrus G. Males. of York
Springs, for the the fourth.
In the retirement of J. C. NEELY, Esq.,
of Gettysburg, present Assistant Assessor,
we but echo the general judgment in ex
pressing our sense of his capacity, fidelity,
and efficiency. He has administered the
law - impartially, and fairly ; has been watch
ful, and active ; and carries with him the
respect of all classes of the community.
[Communicated
M. Hi:axon :—I noticed a few days ago,
that the building committee of the Springs
Hotel, is putting on a Gravel Roof. I
think it a wise selection, for a building of
that kind, and for the purpose it is used—
shower baths aro desirable to the boarders
of the Hotel. 'lt will save the trouble and
expense of erecting a bath house, as you
can have a shower bath after every heavy
rain, after the roof has been on the build
ing ono year or less.
I know that five or six of the same
kind of roofs were put on houses in New
Oxford—all of which aro being taken off
and tin roofs substituted, I have been in
formed that Mr. J. S. Gitt has taken off a
nearly _new Puldstic Slate Roof and is
putting on a tin. Time will soon show if
the Architect understood his business
when ho recommended a_ Gravel roof on
the large Hotel.

it, by the superior growth of the herbage
on Which it had been placed, to the notice

frequently repested, tuyi believed by ha
numerous hearers, that it was painful to
see it contradicted in a late numbpr of a
Southern paper.
can you, Mr. Editor, or any of your

White as the virgin snow,
Closed are her young blue eyes
On all below.
Gone to her heavenly zest,
From ain forevei free,
Pillowed in Jeatie - breast,
Oh, God, with thee
No more we'll hear at morn
Her feet upon the stair—
Death has our loved one borne
To world's more fair. •
Thank Heaven, her feet ,have trod

Now she Is with her God
