Ise, ; Mtn EV DR LATE FLA:WTI:WO OF 4. 0R N ? I believe that by early planting, say from the 4th t to the 10th of the fanner is more c ertain a good yield. I willacitnit that late planting will , sometimes bring. as good a crop as that which is planted earli er, but to do-so.it requires a--very favorable Garton. I have known a good crop raised from seed planted as late as the sth of Jude, but the season was very favorable, and the corn received-n" "bieksets," and bad noth to do but grow. It seems that•efter the plant has reached a certain stage it is not materially injured by dry weather. All practical farmers know that if the ears are not well filled in August there will not be a large crop ; after this the corn will har den; but will not increase in quanty or size. Although as a general thing early plant ing is the best, yet cavwet soils there will .be little or nothing gained by it. It has al ways been my plan to plant early, and drop.an extra grain in eachhill. The num ber of grains required must depend on the care taken le' the selection of the seed.— This is an item which some, even of our• best farmers, are too careless about. The plan which I pursue Is as follows : While cutting the corn, all the best and largest ears, - - are left standing, that they may get, fully ripe. I always choose twice as ruucteas I expdct to use; when the corn is gathr.ed the seed ears are husked and placed °tithe slats over the kitchen, where they remain until spring. Just before plan ing time they are sorted over, and those having the smallest cobs, iu proportion to the length or depth of the grain, arc selec ted for seed. The next operition is to shell three inches from the point and one inch from the butt, and use the remainder for seed. This may seem to some to be too much trouble, rest marred that "it will pay," and that welL Another great mistake is, to have too many stalks in - Me hilt On strong ground three or four stalks will produce more corn than five. I have proved by actual experinient that corn raised from seed taken from the middle of the ear will ripen from two to three weeks sooner than that taken from either end! COBN-ICAISER. [From Detts'a Bxperlmintal Pam Journal ASHES FOR WHEAT. Ashes as , a fertilizer are almost wholly neglected ind allowed to go to waste by our farmers. In many 146tances indeed ;they seem to'be ignorant of their value, or if not ignorant too careless to take the necessary pains to secure and use them. During the winter, ashes can be collected in large quantities, and farmers should do this for the purpose of sowing them on wheat soil. In my experience with ashes I have found them of great value on dif. ferent grains, but most valuable when used on wheat. Ashes are an active fertilizer on wheat, and even five bushels per acre will Push it forward two days ahead of that upon which none is applied. In some sea sons, when hot and sultry weather pre rails about the time wheat is ripening, a 'few days gained is worth half a crop of grain. The ashes strengthen the wheat stem, giving it substance and solidity ; and de velops the berry quicker and better. Ashes are also a preventive against rust, and I have seen wheat upon which ashes were sown free from rust while that upon which none had been sown was rusted close to the drill row. Save your ashes and try the ex periment next season. You will find It to pay you well to collect all the ashes you can get. Farmers can afford to pay as high as 20 cents per bushel for unleached, hard wood ashes for farm use, not only to put on wheat but on corn, oats and clover as well. I believe they are the cheapest manure that the farmer can bun as potash enters largely into all the grain and grasses that are raised. Twenty bushels can be sown to an acre with the very best results. Leached ashes are also good though a lar ger quantity should be used. All around us large quantities both of leached and un leached ashes . go to waste every year.— These should be returned to soil. Now is a good time to collect them and I would advise all farmers to do so and apply them to their fields. LIME ABOUND APPLE TREES. --IY C h ave known some farmers make it a regular practice for a succession of years to throW caustic lime around their apple trees in the spring and summer. We once notied that a tree standing in the immediate vicinity of our dwelling, had all at once put forth with renewed energy, and we were at a loss for some time -to define the case. On exami nation, we found that a qfiantity of lime, which had accidentally been spilled, and rendered worthless by becoming mixed with the refuse on the stable floor, Lad been thrown at the foot and round the tree, and to this, as - the principal cause, we hurtle diatvly accredited the revivisccnce and re newed ancltication of the tree. -Taking the hint from accident, we pur chased twelve, casks of lime, :tad applied half a Ladled to each of the trees in our orchard, and found that it produced imme diate beneficial effects. Not the health of the trees-only, but the quality of the fruit also was greatly improved. This applica tion will be especially beneficial to soils where there is a redundancy of vegetable matter. We would.advise uur farmers, in sonic places, especially in new forest lands recently cleared, and on lowlands, to make nisi of this experiment, and see whether it not deserving of the high recorutuenda i;cm given Itisozosx.—Dr. 4. French, veterinary sugeon, alluding to ringbuue, in the Amer- Sloek Journal, says notion hats long prevailed that 'riugbone is fed by a bladder at the back of the pastern,' and this notion has led to a cruel operation in the treatment of this disease." He adds : "There is indeed a bladder there, called a 'Luisa' sac,' the design of which is to se crete a joint oil to lubricate the tendons, and to prevent the friction of surfaces ; how barbarous then to destroy it. We should here caution mir -horse-breeders against using stallions that have the tenden cy to this, or any similar disease of the joints, bones or tendons:" FRAISTC/8 Brumeas, a noted breeder of improved Chester county swine, living near West Chester, recently held a public sale, at which a sow and pigs were sold for $lOO ; another sow for $93; two hogs, a year old, for $B7 and $64 respectively, a pig fou months old for $36, and a boar pig for $5l.
