THE FIRST.—The stringency in the
money market made the business incident
to the lit of April move sluggishly this
year. There were many disappointments
and failures to meet engagements ; but a
spirit of forbearance and concession has
generally prevailed, and the difficulties
have been pretty well budged over.

will disable him for some time.
BUSINESS.—The Spring trade is about
opening, and our business men are re

Several trunks, as was supposed in this
direction. Mr. Rouser learned that a

"Mason and Dixon's Line" passed into
popular use in the fierce discussions which so
long agitated the country by reason of the
"irrepressible conflict" between Freedom
and Slavery. Now that the contest ha
been ended in the entire abolitlat of Sla
very throughout the Republic, this geo
graphical line ceases to have any national
importance. Still, in view of the past, a
few facts in connection with its origin. may
not be uninteresting to the reader.
In 1854, Hon. John H. B. Latrobe, of
Baltimore, delivered an able and interesting
lecture before the Pennsylvania Historical
Society,• in which he dwells at length upon
the subject.
It seems that the grants of land to Lord
Baltimore, Wm. Penn, and the Dutch set
tlers of Delaware,were somewhat indefinite
ancLdifilculty arose as to the boundaries of
the several grants. The grant to Penn
made part of his southern boundary to
consist of "a circle drawn at twelve miles
distant from Newcastle northward and
westward , into the beginning of the
40th degree of Northern latitude." -
On the 4th of July, 1760, the heirs of
Penn and Lord Baltimore executed a deed
of boundary settlement, under which, to
gether with the decisions of the English
Court of Chancery, Commissioners were
appointed to run the boundary line between
Maryland on the one hand, and Delaware
and Pennsylvania on the . other. The sur
veyors, under the deed, were Thomas Gar
nett, Jonathan Hall, John Luken, Archi
bald McClean, John F. A. Prigga, Archi
bald Emory, John Watson and William
Shankland ; whose original field—notes are
still preserved in the Maryland archives at
Annapolis.
At the end of three years, these Survey
ors had accomplished but little more than
the adjustment of the southern line of Del
aware, half way across the peninsula, the
peninsular line North to the intersection of
the "tangent point" of the Northern circu
lar confine of Delaware, and the irking of
the "twelve mile circle."
It was from the "tangent point" on this
circle, that the meridian was to be contin
ued North to a point, fifteen miles South of
Philadelphia, whence should be traced the
parallel of latitude westward, that was to
divide the provinces, and to the difficulty
of tracing this line is attributable the pres
ence of Mason and Dixon in America.
On the 4th of August 1768, Thomas and
Richard Penn, and Lord Baltimore, being
together in London, agreed with Chas. Ma
son and Jeremiah Dixon, "two mathema
ticians or surveyors," "to mark, run out,
settle; fix and determine all such parts of
the circle, marks, lines and boundaries, as
were mentioned in the several articles or
commissions, and were not yet completed."
Mason and Dixon landed in Philadelphia
en the 15th of November following, and
began their_work at once. They adapted
the peninsular lines, and the radius and
tangent point of the circle, of their prede
cessors. They next ascertained the north
eastern corner of Maryland, and proceed to
run the dividing parallel of latitude ; They
pursued this parallel, a distance of 240
miles, 18 chains and 21 links, from the
place of beginning at the N. E. corner of
Maryland, to the bottom of a valley on
Duukard's creek, where an Indian war
path crossed their route ; and here on the
9th of November 1767,`-101 years ago,—
their Indian escort told them, it was the
will of the Six Nations that the surveys
should cease; leaving 8d wiles, 0 chains
and 59 !bike, as the exact distance remsin
ing to be run west to the South West an
gle of Pennsylvania, not far from the Broad
Treelrunnel on the B. & 0. Itellerred.
By 'agreement of the parties and the de
tree of Lord Harkwicke, of the English.
Court of Chandery, the surveyors, Mason &
Dixon, nisn, ted at the end of every fifth
mile, a stone, graven with the arms of the
Penns on one side, and those of the A'alti
more finally on the other, marking the in
termediate miles with smaller stones, hay :
ing a P on the North aide, and an M on the
South, This.was done as far as Sideling
Hill ; beyond that, the line is marked by a
"vista," cut through the fofest, eight yards
wide, with piles of stones on the motintltin
create, as far as the summitbf the Allegany;
beyond which the line is marked with posts,
willt atones and earth heaped around them.

In course of time, the northaast botanciary
stone of Maryland, was undermined by a
brook, and falling down was removed and
built into the chimney of a neighboring
farm house. When it was missed, a joint
commission was authorized by the States of
Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware, and .
Lieut. Col. James D. Graham, of the 17. l.
Topographical Engineers, proceeded to re
place it. A "triangular prismatic post of
granite," marked with the letters, M, D and
P, respectively facing the States to which
these letters refer, now marks the begin
ning of Mason and Dixon's line.

be a contest, however, on the decree of dia.,

involving the question whether the bonds
' held by these.4eritieWpg, originally hy
pothecated to Johns Hopkins stud °there,
are held absolute or as collateral*
It is a question in which all the bond
holders Sr. deeply interested, and we
hare been surprised to learn that, with .
one or two eirceptions, counsel have not
been employed to look after their inter
ests. Not only are the bond-holders vital
ly interested in this question of distribg
tion, but also in the 'aloof the road. The
road, with Its franchisee, ought to bring at
least $200,000. Yet, anises same arrange
ment or combination be effeted to bid,
these is danger of it going at a nominal
sum, involying a heavy sacritioe to the
bettailds bond-holders. WOUld it not be
well for the . resident bond-holders to have
a meeting for cenanijation, at least? II
all were to unite in, the employment of
counsel to look- after their interests, the
cost to each would be comparatively tri
fling.

furnishes some interesting statistics in re
gard to the Lutheran church. The popula
tion of the world is estimated at thirteen
hundred millions, of which 335,000,000 are
nominally Christians. These again are
divided into 170,000 Roman Catholics, 80,-
000,00 Protestants, and 76,000.000 Greek
Catholics. Of the 80,0000,000 Protestants
more than one-half (47,115,500) are Luth

numbers:

Austria and Moravia,

United Stater,
Other Ootintrlee,-..
There statistics show that the Lutheran
Church in the world is larger than all the
other Protestant Churches combined ;
that evin in the United States it is numer
ically tle third denomination, numbering
more communicants than any other Pro
testant Church except the Methodist and
Baptist. In 1820, when the General Syn

eran ministers ; in 18119, more than 2.000
ministers, 3.500 oongregations, and 400,-
000 communicants.
Tho Christain World, for April, gives
the following summary of the statistics of
the Methodist Episcopal Church for 1868,
showing the magnitude and growth of
that powerful denomination in the United
States during the previous year:

Laneister Express has the following truth
ful remarks on the cost or advertising :
The New York Tribune recently received
two advertisements from the Post Office
Department to be published six weeks,
the price to be charged not to exceed t3O
and $4O respectively. To these proposi
tions the Tribune thus replies:
"Inasmuph as the publiestion of the two
advertisements in the Tribune would cost,
at our lowest rates, $B4 50 and SIQS respect
ively, we cannot, of course, insert thorn
for PO and $4O respectively. The prices
named would not cover the cost of the
white paper required to print the notices
in the Tribune, and we know of no reason
Why the quvernment should.ask us to du
its work hor a less price Oulu tinsiness men
pay. If the law limits the amount that
can be paid, we ad vi-e CongreaS to mod ilv
the same so as to enable the Departtnents
to insert their advertisements in newspa
pers whore they will be read by those in
terested. We are always pleased to insert
whatever unobjectionable advertisements
are otlered, but one mau's money is a
good as another's, and we must charge all
alike. Nu newspaper With any circuta-
WM call agvr• I to insert advertisements at
the rates pained," •
This is the plain common-pens° view of
the wetter. It seems diflicult for many
people to unuenitauci that au advertise
ment in oue paper may be worth twice as
much as the same notice in another jour
nal of only half the circulation. All jour
nals of established circulation and char
acter, which conduct their business upon
correct principles, have a filed scale of
priaes, amd adhere to it. The very fact that
a newspaper is willing to publish an ad
vertieteruent half-prlco. whether for the
government or an individual, is prinus
fecie avidennt that they have only hall
value to give in return for tue money re
ceived. A little reflection most satisfy
any one, that an advertisement In a paper
having a circulation of 2,000 copies is worth
just twice as much as the same matter in
one circulating only 1,000 copies; and yet
it is an every day occurrence for advertia-
Ors le jfy,ist PP O P ha_ ing their advertise-
Monte inserted St the hall -price rates,
without regard to the advantages in cir
culation. There are few transactions In
business more unreasonable than this.
- GETTYSBURG POST-OFFICE.—On
Monday last, the President scut into the
Senate the nomination Of J4COB KiTZMIL
LER for Postmaster at CiOttypbgrg. Mr.
K. iswell known, having filled the office
of Prothonotary for three years with mark
ed acceptance, acquiring the reputation of
a courteous and efficient officer. He lost
an arm in the War for the suppression of
the Rebellion, is a thorough Republican,
and is amply qualified for the position.—
We have no doubt he will make an accept
able Postmaster.
DEAp.—The Knoxville (Illinois) .Re-
PubilOaft, the l s uJt., contains an oh.
tuary of the death of Mr. LE4.I4IDEIR EINZIt t
who died from injuries received in the
breaking in of the roof of a aoal bank on
his farm, by which he was buried in the
debris for six hours, with scarcely suffici
ent space to breathe. He was about 30
years of age and a member of Knoxville
Lodge No. 88 A. Y. M. Mr. Biker's pa
rents formerly resided to Adams county.
JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.—Persons
'who were elected to the °dice of Justice of
the peace, at the recent Spring eleotions,
will do well to bear in mind that they are
required by law to give written notice to
the Prothonary, within thirty days, of
their acceptance.
I , ,Tp.;vv Timm. -Mr. NICHOLAS WEAVER,

CATHARTIC PILLS,
For all the paEposes of a Laxative
Perhaps no one medicine is eci universally required
by everybody as a cathartic, nor was ever any before
so universally adopted into use, to every country and
among all classes, as this mild but efficient pargatirs
Pill. The obvious reason le, that it is a more reliable
and far more effeottial remedy than any other. Thom
who bate tried it, know that it cured them; those
who have not, know that it cures their neighbor, and
friends, and all Imo* that what it does once it doew
always—that it never fails threagb any fault or neg.
lest of its compositiou. We have thousands upon
thousands of certificates of their remarkable cures of
the following complaints, but Buck cures are known in
every neighborinxkl, and we need not publish them.—
Adapted to all agos and conditions in all climatal
Containing neither cab-mel or my deleterious drug;
they may be token with safety by anybody. Their
sugar coating preserves them ever fresh and makes
them pleasabt to take, while beiug pare; vegetable,
