RE 'MAR KA ti LE. —Pausing a few days
since ler a short time in a shop on Balti
more street in this place ourattention was
attracted by the net, that the proprietor
and three employers, all present, wer e
men well advanced in life, as was attested
by the gray hairs of all. On inquiry, we
ascertained that the proprietor bad been
in the same shop for fifty yeais, and that
two of the employees, of.wlMin we have
spoken, have been there 13 years each.—
The united ages of the four is 247, being
an average of 6l years. Is not this some
thins rather remarkable, and rarely parall
leed in this fast age of c ntinual change?
DEAD:.—The -Saint Peter (Minnesota)
Tribune of the 3rd instant, comes to us in
mourning over the death, of Mr. HENRI -
A. SWIFT, of that place, one its moat pro
minent and respected citizens. An edi
torial obituary tefers to the high social
standing awl exemplary character of the
deceased, and attests the loss felt in the
community by putting thepaper in mourn
ing. Itirr. SwiFr was a b.othetldiarlaw of
Mr. SOLiniON J. WELTY, of this place,
having married Miss RCTII ANN LIVINGS
TON, dalWilter of ADAM LIVINGsTON, do
ceased.
FIRE.—We regret to learn that the line
dwellinz of Mr. trill:Aix D. ,Ns.wusx, on
the pike in Fran'Elia township, formerly
known as "Newman's Tavern," was de
stroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon last.
The fire is said to have originated Irons
sparks from the chimney. When discover
ed the roorwas all in a blaze, and in -
con
sequence of the high wind prevailing at the
time the progress of the fire was so rapid
that little or no furniture was saved. The
building had recently been thoroughly re
paired and was occupied by Mr. D. as a
dwelling. We understand there was an in_
surance in the Munimasburg Company, but
have not learned the amount.
IMPORTANT DEClSlON,—Commis
sinner Rollins, in response to the inquiry,
"van a fanner get his grain manufactured
into flour and wholesale or retail the same
without license 2" _has decided that
"though a farmer may, without liability
to special tax, sell his groin or other jurut
prr,(l nets, either at the place of production,
or while travelling about from ao
place in the manner of a peddler,' yet his
exemption is limited by the law to the
proiffet,N of Ills 01111 fa yin ; and, therefore,
when he ha. grain floured at the mill, or
manufactured into flour, it being no lon
.ger a farm'product, but a manufaetured
article, the farmer would be liable io spe
toial tax, the same as any other person;
either as a dealer or peddler, according as
he may sell the same from any fixed place
where he may keep it for sale or sell while
travelling about from place to place in the
Jnanner of a peddler, and without regard
ssi:cther lie may sell in small quantities
or by the_wagon load."
FATAL ACCIDENT.—Last week we
brkily noticed the death of James Grimes,
the 24th nit., while quarrying stone near
Frederick, lid. The Examiner of the 3d
inst. says :—".11 seems he had been at
work some time undermining the stone, -
which weighs about two tons, and was en
deavoring to throw it from ils fastening,
when it fell on him, killiug him instantl:"; but
_ strange to say when the stone was rem .ved,
which took three quarters of an ho , not
a bone was broken, which Is explained by
the faCt that the ground on which he was
standing is light and sandy, and when the
stone fell it buried - him to the earth. De
ceased, prior to the war of the rebellion,
was a resident of Adams county, Pa., and
his wife and children reside at present in
Petersburg, In said
,couirty. When the
war broke out he came here and enlisted in
Company C. Cole's Cavalry, and served
three years,_ when 'he was linnorably dis
hared. He was about 58 years old."
A VALUABLE WORK.—We have re

Messrs. R. W. Blass dz. Co., Hartford'

great value but its high price has prevent

The low price at which Messrs. Bliss tic

The annexed extract from a letter of .Rov.
Dr. VALENTINE, the accomplished Presi

2.—CHARADE.
"Wicked paynims full fifty or more
Before my lance have gone down on
the sand ;
Dragons tylozen and giants a score
All have fallen beneath my baud;
Enchanters'a few and kings one or two
I have conquered at your command."
Thus a young knight made his suit
To a lady coquettish and fickle and gay,
But she was either provokingly mute
Or else would say him nay,
For she was my whole, and vexed his
soul
By the pranks she made him play.
Ile went to his castle my last to keep,
And he travelled along in eore distress,
For my first was long and rough and
steep, • •
And how could ho ever guess—
Who knew less by far -of wooing than
war—
That "no" could ever mean "yes"?

LECTeRE AND READING ENTER
TALINMENT AT YORK SPRINGS.—Last
evening, S. J. KOONTZ, A. 31., delivered a
lecture in this place on "The Oratory of
Revolutionary Periods." Those who were
so fortunate asto gain admittance enjoyed
quite an intellectual treat. The lecture was
well written, and though faulty in minor
particulars, was delivered in a style so as
to gain the attention and appreciation of 'ill
present. Mr. K. has read and studied toa
good purpose, and possesses a thorough
knowledge of history, which enables him to

past. After the lecture the audience was
entertained by the rendering of selections
from Shakspeare, Dickens, Poe, and others,
and to show the difference in style, several
chapters from the 'Bible were read in a
most forcible and impressive manner. The
entertainment was concluded by reading
Mrs. Caudle's Lecture, which almost in a
literal sense "brought down the house."
Mr. Koontz is a good elocutionist, a pleas
ant speaker, and possesses all the qualifica
