- Statatitt Sistin4. ageity. reiday, Feb. IS, I$ L - [SING. The ibllowing tont the New Engfafici Farmer, wilt help to illustrate the great importance of under-draining, and will show why it is so mach insisted on by intelligent and scientific agriculturists: When soil is wet, the heat of the sun, which is intended to warm the soil, is ex pended in evaporating the water from the surface, and thus the warmth which is ne cessary to the growth of - plants does not • reach their roots. When a soil is dryit often becomes twen ty or thirty degrees warmer than the alma sphere above it, but a soil filled with water is cooler than the atmosphere. When a soil is too wet the plant-food which it•conadns is so much dilated that a • Much greater quantity of fluid must be ta ken up by the roots, or it will not receive due nourlahnient. The vessels of the plant will be gorged with io much water that the plauvitaelf will be itept.at low temperature, in consequence of the increased evaporation from the steam and leaves. When clay soils are wet they become compact and adhesive, and prevent the air from reaching the-roda of plants. When the water 11 removed they beconu3 open and mellow and admit the air freely, and are more easily worked. Drainage not only removes the water, but makes room for the-air, which will by the Wow of natural laws take its place, and pene trate to every part from which the water is drawn off. Vegetable matter immersed in water de- PcuoPoses slowly, and yields but little food to Pleats. and that sot always of a whole some character. Bet when the air has free access to it, it decomposes rapidly, and yields carbonic acid and other elements of mention. Manures containing organic mat- • tern go much farther on a dry soirthan on a wet one.. If a sandy soil lies upon a wet clay subsoil, the water will constantly rise tower& the surface and the roots and or garde matter in the soil wilt - have the bene • fit of its presence. On Borne soils plants are liable to be ranked up in 'a drought. This often be cause the roots cannot penetrate the subsoil, which is filled with stagnant or unwhole some water. Remove this stagnant water by a drain, and the subsoikwill become mel low and sweet, and Me roots will penetrate, deeply into it,'and thus be able to endure at drought that dries the surface. 'Sometimes it does very little good to break up a herd, compact subsoil with the plough. It soon becomes again lewd and impenetra ble. But if the soil is drained „below this hard pan the rains penetrate thiongh it and soften it, and remove any noxious proper ties it may contain, and a deep root-bed is made the plants, by which they will be sus tained even in very dry Basso* It is where hard subsoils lie mar the our** that props suffer most from droughts. Thus drainage warms, awl deepens, and sweetens the soil, and readersit more pro ductive, and enables the growing crops the better to endure the effects of a wet or'a dry scasoit. The roots of com'and some other crops penetrate fl mellow, sdil from three td tour feet deep. Draining, then, to be effeo: teal, should take off the water W 4 depth somewhat below that to which the roots Penetrate. This, should always be done where the fall is sufficient to allow it. PHI I.O4IOJRHY.IIIIIrO PATIRRENO POULTRY TS PRANCE.—The following description is given of the meth od adopted in Preece for_ fattening poultry on An extended scale 1 4. large circular building, thoroughly ventilated, and with the tight partially excluded, is Constructed and fitted up with cages placed on tiers of circu lar shelves revolving on .a common central axis. The apparatus is so arranged as to be readily raised, depressed or rotated, and the rages are so divided As to give , each bird a separate stall, containing a perch. The birds are placed with their tails converging In a common centre, while the head of each may be brought in front by a simple rotato ry movement of the shelf on the central axle. Each bird la fastened to its cell by leathern fetters, which prevent movement except of the head and wings, without oc casioning Pain. When the feeding time comet, the bird is enveloped in a wooden caee, permitting 'only the head and neck to appear, and' which is popularly known as the paletot or overcoats by this means all unnecessary struggling is avoided, The at tendant (a young girl) seizes the head in the left hand, gently prellses the break, in order to open It ; then, with her tight, she intro duces into the gullet a tin tube about the size of a finger. - This tube Is united toe flexible 4.lpe nommutlicating, with the dish of food, r: iel from which the desired quantity is in unutneoualy injected into the stomach.— The feeding process, it is stated, is so short that two hundred birds can be fed by one person, in an - hour. The food Is- w liquid I paste composed of Indian and barley meal boiled in milk. It is administered three t imes.a day, in gain tidal varying according to the condition of nob 'bird. tJsa FOR COAL Asnas.-LA careful timer in Ohio writes that be has used coal ashes for twenty years as a ,compost for the drop pings in the poultry yard. White and red • ash contains four per cent. of soluble attuni ng. By sifting dry coal ashes every morn ing and his moats, he obtains at the end of a year a ton or more of material as rich as guano. The coal ash should be kept per_ feet* dry. In that condition lt-is as good ,as gypsum as an absorbent.
