The exercises of the evening opened with singing "The Sunday School Volun tepr Song," • folloWed with prayer by the !tutor, Rev. E. BREIDENBAUGEI, and sing ing by the Intent Department, "The Wa ter of Life." Two monuments were then built up by nine boys and nine girls, each depositing a block and repeating a pas sage of scripture as the block was put in place. The monument erected by the boys recorded the attributes of God—. Love Power, Goodness, Wisdom, Holiness, &c.: that of the girls the attributes of the Chris. thin Cifarity, Brotherly Kindness, God liness, Temperance, Knowledge, etc. An arch was then sprung aoress from the two pillars: surmounted by a dove, the infant school singing "Christ was born in Beth lehem." Eleven girls from the infant dep frtnient then appeared on the platform, ranged in a semi -circle, and each bearing a shield witli.the reverse aide towards the autilence. After hinging in common, each of the girls sang a verse separately and at the same time 'turning her shield with face to the audience and dispi ying a letter of the alphabet,'until the motto, •Feed my Lambs," appeared in full. After chant ing a verse in common, the smallest of the 'timber knelt in the centre of the semi- eitele, and recited sprayer, at the close ,of which all united in responding "Amen.' This part of he programme was firdstic. well executed, and attracted much atten- ME The selwol then sang "Giving," when the offerings tor the year wore brought for ward, with designs. The first, by the in t school, was a Cross bearitig in gilt „let ters-, with green trimming, the words Love, Justice, Redemption. The cross was borne by three lithle girls represent ing the christian graces—Faith, with a bi , ile ; Hope, with an anchor; and Charity, with a crown. Appr - Triiite passages of scripture were then recited, sometimes in common, then in turn, with responses by the school boys and girls, during which thq crown was placed ou the cross. when the latter was set lack on the stage, with the bible and anchorat the base. The of fering of the Infant School was then read, itidhunting to 8115. The girls of the senior department sent up as their design a miniature illuminated church, surrounded by ayard neatly deck ed with evergreen, walks, (ke. It was pre sented by two girls, one of whom repeat ed the words, "From the family to the Suuday School ; from the Sunday School to 410 Church ; from the Churl' to Heav en;" the other reciting Psalms 84: 1 and 2. BREIDEN EA UGH, the pastor, re ceived the designs as they were sent up, making appropriate remarks thereon, af ter which the .Infant School recited in con cert the =;,l Psalm. Next 14 girls from the senior department appeared on the stage arid performed the "Christmas Idyl," comprising singing and recitation in con cert- and separately. The excite ment and enthusiasm of UM, little end' at this stage of the exercises excited no little merrime , t among the audience. Order restored, the school sang "Joy I Joy! Joy !" when the benediction was pronounced, and he audience dismissed. The senior department, however, had still another treat in store. By invitation they repaired to the lecture room, where a bduntiful supply of ice cream and cake was: served up.- The entire programme pasved off satisfactorily, and the occasion will, doubtless be a bright spot in the memory of all who were present. The of- Bettis and teachers of the school deserve much credit for the taste, tact, and zeal manifested in getting up the entertain ment. REFORMED SABBATH SCLIOOL.L The' Sat bath School of the German Re forined Church, in this place, had also a plerisant time on Christmas night. Three Christmas trees had been put up in the Chu'rcli, the central op° being a very large, one reaching from the floor to the ceiling,' with a smaller one on either side. The trees were laden with gills for the child ren., and otherwise decorated and bril liantly lighted up with candles, presentingi a bright and cheerful scene. The central tree supported au illuminated transparen cy with the words, "Glory to God in the highest—peace on earth—good will to men." The Chutch was well filled. After the usual exercises, the school sang a number 9f hymns, and Rev. Mr. Deat lob, the pastOr,,deliverod a short but interest ing address. The distribution of gilts to the'cliildren was ;a pleasant feature of the evening. occasioning a good deal of enthu siasm. Mr. T. J. Hie address was listen ed to with the greatest attention and in this respect was in striki.4 contrast with many of the ethers, not even exisepting that of the anniversarian. People often pay little regard to the quality of the wood they purchase, but take that which offered at the least price,' es though there were no . difihrence between" one cord of woad and another. The truth Is the quail . ty of wood is extremely variable, not only as Waver the different Varieties but. as • between specimens of the Same variety. A correspondent of the Prairie Farmer furnishes some practiCal suggestions on this subject. He says wood grown on high land is capable of generating ' much more West than, the same variety grown on low land. So, too, wood grown in a northern latitude-is preferable to that grown further south. The wood of old well-matured trees is of greater value than that of those of younger growth. Wind-falls, that have beep a considerable time on the ground, trees tantially decayed, or wood that has long been piled in a damp place, is of comparatively, little value as fuel, and should be bought at a very low price If at all. It adds much to the value of 1 wood if it is prepared for the stove when It li is green, it is then thoroughly seasoned, and is finally placed under shelter. Care, however, must be taken not to pack it too closely or to put it in a building badly ven tilated, as it is liable to be injured by the dry rot. By farthe most valuable tree for fuel is the shell-bark hickory. It is compar atively easy to work, burnt freely, leaves no unburnt coals ; while the bark, which in many kinds of woods, is of no value, is the finest kind of kindling. We believe, from the experience we have had in burn ing this wood, as from experiment with a view of determining its relative value as a fuel, it Is worth at least a fourth more than maple and upward of a third,-more than beech. Oak wood differs fa value very, greatly according to the e' of of the tree as well as on account of the difference of the locality where it is grown, and the thoroughness with which it is dried ; white oak ranks next to hickory ; yellow oak is of about the.same value as maple, while the red and black oaks are rated about the same as beech. In this clamdfication, how ever, we base our calculation on oak wood that is well dried as the wood with which it is compered ; but this will not be the case unless extra care Is taken with it.— The soft woods as a class are about half as valuable as hickory ; some of them stand ing higher in the scale than others on ac count of their superior density. In the purchase of wood as in every thing else, there is quite a saving in buying a good article. It costa as much to haul a load of poor wood as of good, and the labor of preparing it for the stove is about the same ; while the difference in the quality of the fiber, and the ease with which the dinner is cooked, argue strongly in favor of good wood. THE MORNING GLORY.—CoI. C. H. BUEHLER has received a large assortment of these famous base-burning Sieves, which on the score of economy, elesinli ness, easy management, and general util ity stand unrivalled and defy competition.
