The sanctimonious style, so comuaon , in ' 1

ins; Associations are begintilnittobk•ree
ognizod;and these institutiOns ate being
rapidly extended throughout the country.
Gettysburg is reaping, tha t fruits of the
one established here a year Or two ago in
the impulse given to building and Wl
proveMents of real estate.; But there is
another aspect of the subject... -the effect
upon the membership. The Baltimore
:American, in a reeert article upon the
operations of ti e Building Associations in
that city, prow:imams them "the greatest
and most prietical moral reformatory in
stitutions ever devised."." They are quiet
ly, but effectualy, doing much to. keep
young- men out of vicious habits, and
reclaim those who have taken downward
steps. They draw young men to them
with a stated object in view, and 'require
a weekly deposit from their earnings
which they cannot spare without giving
up carousals of all descriptions. As their
deposits increase their interest in the in
stitution is enhanced, and their desire to
take more shares grows into a fixed habit
that drives off and extinguishes many
other bad habits. The Building Associa
tion has a hold on its members that makes
it necessary ttat they should attend stead
ily to their work, and give up all those
sure means of making the poor poorer to
which the habit of "spendingaa you go"
is certain to lead.
This desire to become possessed of a
house shoUld be inculcated in the minds
of all ioui.g men. The prudence and
economy that are essential to a beginning
in husbanding their earnings will keep
them out of evil courses and evil habits.
Joun Jacob Astor said that the accumula
tion of his first thousand dollars was the
tuo,t difficult work of his Hie. With that
.shousand be laid the foundation of his
colossal lortune. Had he spent tell he
earned during these early years of his life,
ho would have fallen into habits that would
have grown from year to year, requiring
increased expenditure, and have kept oins
always a poor man.
DUTIES OF SCHOOL DIRECTORS.—
From the last number of the Pennsylva
nia &hos:4 JouAwl we clip the following
sensible advice ou the importance of di
rectors visiting' Me schools.:—"The duty
of visiting the Schools is considered one of
the most important duties that directors
have to discharge In the administration of
the system. The law makes the duty im
perat. cc, and no persAin snoUld accept the
office of school director unless he is will
nrto perform it. When well done its
etfe.t is always to make the sehoils more
efficient. It stimulates the pupils in their
studies. It enaules directors to ascertain
the exact condition of the schools, school
-110111408 and school grounds. On the whole,
so high a value 41008 the Department set
upon the local supervision of the schools
that it always expects to find the schools
of districts which are regularly and sys
tematically visited by boards of directors,
according to the provisions' of the law,
other things equal, fifty per ceiaL better
than dibse of districtslu watch the schools
are entirely neglected in this respect, and
this estimate is made from personal oh
iervation made in hundreds of districts."
ADVERTISING.—Profesaor Eastman'
of the Poughkeepsie Commercial College,
in a recent lecture,'• made some very sensi
ble remarks upon advertising. His views
are worthy of attention, as be has made
advertising a life study; and by practic
ing (even recklessly) what he preaches,
has adhieved a large success in his depart
ment He says that the - Merchants of
Europe are far in advance o. American
merchants in skilful advertising, as well
as in the extent to which they advertise.
It is not unfrequently the case that single
firma on the other side of the Atlantic ex
pend $100,009 per annum in advertising
their business. He deprecates the method
of advertising in a single advertisement
an entire stock, and claims that each arti
cle should be advertised thoroughly by
itself. He cites as agood example of the
benefits of thorough advertising, the pay
ing of mom() by A. T. Stewart upon one
occasion to advertise a certain lineof goods
by which means he realized a clear profit_
/MA.ann..
cessful, must be thorough enough to pro
dim, an excitement in the minds of the
public: Many a man -lacks pluck to go
on, and Talks to reap the full fruits of his
outlay by stopping only a /laze too soon.—
He argues that the general principles of
advertising are thesame in all kinds of
business, and that everything else being
equal, the man who succeeds by this
means in one business would also succeed
in any other.
Mr. Bonner once asked Mr. Bennett, of
the Herald, if lfo could have the use or
three pages of his paper, and upon being
told that, by paying double price, he amid
have all he wanted, promptly replied that
he would take the whole advertising space
