COURSE OF LECTURES.—We feel
assured that our t ceders will be glad to
know that . the young men connected with
the Literary Societies of the College have
arranged another course of popular Lec
tures to come off this Winter in Agricul
tural Hall. These Lectures are gotten up
for thc:lsenefit of our citizens mainly, and
are attetndea with heavy expense, as Lec
turers of reputation have to be paid li uer
ally, liire , nsins to be seen whether our
citizens sufficiently appreciate these liter
ary treats to make them a permanent
"institution." The young men who go to
the trouble of getting them up, and assume
the financial risk, certainly deserve
credit, and 'if our citizens are wise they
will liberally sustain them. The first
Lecture of the course will be delivered
Tuesday evening, Dec. 15, by GEORGE
ALFRED TOWNSEND. a brilliant and wide
ly reputed platform talker, on "Pennsyl
vania Dutch."; He will be followed - by the
famous "Josh Billings," and other noted I
lecturers.
RAILROAD EXTENSION.—We are
glad to ste that public attention has been
renewed to the expediency La building a
railroad from York to NOW Oxford, and
hope to see ibis improvement made be

the thriving business and money centre
of a large and important county (the
`white rose,' separated from the 'red rose'
of Lancaster by the Susquehanna river),
and contains about 15,C00 inhabitants,
having increased its population 75 -per

the advantages wnielf would accrue to
York from a line of road to. New Oxford,

an east and west route as she now is on a

FESDERICR.—At the late election, "Han

gave Gen. Grant 2 majority. It is said this
is the first instance in the recollection of
the oldest inhabitant when Harmers failed

of funds to prosecute the enterprize.—On
Sunday last, near Creagerstown, a daughter
of Mr. John Wachter was shot and killed
by a young daughter of Dr. J. W. Miller.
They were playing together with a pistol,
which was not known to be loaded. Miss
Wachter and a little daughter of Dr. Miller
went up stairs, where they discovered a pis

The hog cholera or some other disease is
prevailing among the swine in the neighbor
