suspenders, which were tied to the steps
of the lock-up. He was immediately
taken down, and after the lapse of about

RONl'i 11101.—The Republican demon
stration On Weeuesday afternoon and night
paused off ,iuieti):, notwithstanding some
provoking in cidenLi calculated to excite
feelitw. While Gen. aawley was speaking
in the afternoon he was interrupted and an
noyed for nearly a half hour, by the beat
ing of drums at Weire hold, themagon with
drums beating finally passing slowly through
the diamond. The General at this point
stopped remarking that he would "wait an
til the last division of Lee's army lu:d pass
ed," a bit of Irony that provoked shunts or
laughter. At night, some rowdy stole one
of the Hanover banners, iirtataiug it from
the hands of the person who was .Carrying
it, and it has 131111Q8 been miming. Several
capes and torches were also steest. We
- arc glad to say that . these discreditable pro
vocations failed toproduce any disturbance,
the Republicans wisely refraining Aom
hostile acts.

flags were displayed all over town. At
o'clock, Hon.' EDWARD MbPitassore
called the meeting to order, by moving

President—Henry Lott.
Vice Presidents—Maj. Robert Bell, Jacob
Musselman, E. H. Hiteshew, James Moore,

Reamer, Jacob G. I♦lcllheny, Moses .11.
Neely, Charles Herbst, H. C. Peters.
P. F.tisZER SMITH, Of West Chester, was
introduced aud addressed the meeting for
about one hour iu a very able speech, and
was followed by Gen. S. W. CRAWFORD ;
of the Regular Army, in a few brief and
well timed remarks. As an officer of the'
Army, the General felt reluctant to par
ticipate in political struggles, but having
participated in the battle of Gettysburg ho
could not hesitate to respond to the call of
the meeting and assure them of his cor
dial sympathy. His position in Kentucky
gave Mule opportunity to know the condi
tion of sentiment in the South, which was
as rebellious to-clay as during the war.
He believed the only way to secure Peace
and Order in the country was to elect the
great Soldier who had conquered the Re
hellion. Every true soldier and patriot
ought to vote for Gen. Grant. Gen. Craw
ford,it
will be recollected, lead the gallant
charge of the Reserves at Round Top
which broke the Rubel lines July 2, 1.863.
He is a Democrat and was but recently
claimed by the Copperheads as a Seym
mourite. The Meeting gave hint three
hearty cheers.
Gen. JOSEPH R. HAWLEY, of Connecti
cut, was next introduced as a gallant sol
dier and a live Yankee Governor, and for
two hours held the close attention of the
ctowd by one of the most logical and elo
quent speeches- to which we have ever
listened, intermingled with sharp hits and
humorous illustrations which elicited fro
Tient applause. His exposition of the
record of Horatio Seymour and the Infi
delity of the Democratic party to every
principle of Right, and Honor and Justice
way a scathing one, while his- defence of
the Republican party, its policy. its aims
and purposes, was thorough, eloquent and
over- whelining. - ---
The meeting adjourned with three
hearty cheers for Grant and Colfax, and
three more for Gen. Hawley.
THE NIGHT MEETING
IWas a monster demonstration, far ex
ceeding in number that of the afternoon.
It'was announced to be held in the Court.
house, but at an early hour it became evi
dent that the Court room would not hold
half the people, and lights were catempo
- at the stand in the diamond. It was
intended to have a torch-light procession,
and the Boys in Blue were out intuit force
with banner,, torches and equipments.
1 and a brass baud. The Hanover Club was
expected to participate in the procession
and had telegraphed that they were coin
ing up 300 strong. The train, however,
was provoking delayed, not reaching the
depot until near 81 o'clock, while the peo-
Iple were clomarous for the speaking to
commence. In consequence of the late
hour, it was determined to dispense with
the precession, and the two Clubs marched
maid wild enthusiasm, to the dianiond, the
entire square being brilliantly illuminated
with-the glaro of torches, and transparen
cies of every conceivable shape and de
sign. As soon as order was secured, CLIN
TT: LLOYD, Esq., of Williamsport, was in
trodiMed aad addressed the, meeting fur
about one hour with much ability, being
frequently applauded. Gen. Ei AWLEY was
again called out, and madewanother elo
quent and telling speech, and was followed
by Col: MOFFIN, of Staunton, Va.
It was now near 11 o'clock, and the meet
ing closed with repeated cheers for the good
'cause. 'Taking it all in ali v it was a cheer
ing demonstration and augurs - well fur
next Tuesday. '
