the service of the Union Pacific Railroad
Company, and had been engaged at the
terminus of the road. On the evening of
the 30th ult., he started for Benton for the
purpose of getting his watch repaired at
a jeweler's in that place. While attempt
ing tb get on a train at Table Rock Station
he fell across the rail, and a portion of the
the train passed over him, severing both
legs and otherwise mangling his body.
The deceased served three years in the
late War as a member of Co. F. 87th Regi
ment Pa. Vihunters, and was a member of
G. A. R. Poet Np. 9, Gettysburg, Pa. He
was a young man of good.business capac

deeply sympathise with his afflicted rela

A SWINDLER.
.-74alatir140 morning
stranger, Calling hit:spell' ASPINWALL:
called at the Boot and Alice -Store of D.
ICITZMILLER tt Estonian., In tdds'gobtee,
and purchased a pair of lmdst for $9.50,
representing himself short of hinds, and
requesting as a favor that they wotela cash
a Check of sloooh the Ad liatisinal Bank
of Philadelphia,' drawn by the firm of
Carnell Williams, payable to Aapin
weirs order. The gentlemanly epperance
and bearing of the stranger induced M.
KITZMILLER to believe all was right, and
he cashed the Check, paying Aspinwall
$91.50 and retaining $9.50 for the boots. It
turns oat that tee cheek was forged, and
the whole thing a swindle. The stranger
was well and fashionablidressed, with a
dark pepper and salt business coat, brown
cassimer pants, &e., and is probably 25
years of age. He left in the noon train,
It seems he has been operating in York.
Hanover and other place; in the same
style.
We notice by the Philadelphia papers
that a number of forged cheeks, purport
ing to have been drawn by firms iu Phil
adelphia upon the Second National Bank
of Philadelphia, for sums varying from
$5O to $2OO, have from time to time, for the
last few-montJas, been forwarded to said
bank for payment. They are all on a form
purporting to have been lithographed by
Fred. Mayer & Co., 96 Fulton street, N
York, printed in pale red ink, the title,
"Second National Bank," in ornamental
German text, and the whole form and ap
pearance of the cheeks entirely different
from any ever gotten up for the bank or
any of its customers. Some of them ap
pear to have been put forth in the far West,
but more recently in the interior of the
State of New York. Either "Aspinwall"
has been rapidly changing his base, or he
has confederates operating in the same line
at various points.

IMPROVBMENT.—SamueI Herbst has
commencecd his new three story brick
house on Chambersburg street. Dr. HILL
has completed the improvement - at his
residence on the same street, and has now
a desirable and convenient property.
Wm Shillen and John Norbe6k have
their new houses, on Baltimore stret, well
on the way.
Jacob Stock has made a fair start with
his, corner of High and Washington
streets. It is to be two-story, with a base
ment, and to be built of brick.
William Bailey is about to commence
the erection of a handsdme cottage at the
east end of York street. Wm. Grumbine
ditto.
Miss Martha Warren will have a dwell
ing erected in Chambersburg street.
J. M. Rowe' is having a brick residence
put up on Baltimore street.
Henry Meals is about to build a brick
house on the Mumniasburg road, a short
distance from town.
The spirit of improvement has fairly
developed itself in Gettysburg, more
buildings have been put up during the last
year than for ten years previous. A still
larger number will go up next year. We
understand that there is a probability of
the early erection of a Sash Factory and
Machine Shop, by capitalists from abroad.

GENERAL NEWS
A sixauLAN. disease has been discovered
among the cattle in Warren county, lowa.
When attacked the cattle swell under the
throat, have the symptoms of being poison
ed by a rattlesnake, are perfectly wild, have
convulsions, and die in a few hours.
A GENTLEMAN of Norfolk found on Mon
day the enormous sum of $300,000 in an
old trunk which had not been opened for
several generations. Mr. Miles Bell was
the lucky man, and the money Spanish
milled dollars, Virginia currency of 177 G,
paper at that.—Norfolk Virginian.
A LITTLE girl named Mary Breen, whose
parents live in Patterson, N. J., was dis
covered on Friday evening hanging by a
piece of clothes line in the yard. She was
insensible when found, and died soon after.
It is thought she had been playing in a pile
of wood near by, and fell into the ready
made noose.
ERROPEAR WAlL—European despatches
represent a general War as immiuen t.
France and Prussia are thoroughly armed,
on a war footing, and watching each other
closely. The Pull Mall Gazette says
that In every capital of Europe the belief
that a great and immediate war is impend
ing grows day by day, and that Those best
informed expect it to break out before the
end of the year.
A REMARKABLE revival is in progress in
Water Street, New York city, one of the
worst sections of the city. John Allen,
called "the wickedest man in New Nork,'•
and Tommy Hadden, both noted dance_
house keepers, have professed conversion,
and converted their establishments into
prayer-meetings halls. Thousands of peo_
ple, prostitutes, shoulder-hitters, gamblers,
&c., attend daily.
Taoops FOR TEDIRESSEE.—The outrages
of the Ku-Klux-Klan in Tennessee induced
. the Legislature to send a Committee to
Washington to represent the terrible con
dition of things and ask for troops to protect
the people from murder and outrage. Pre
sident Johnson, satisfied of the existence of '
this organization, composed of Rebels, and
of their purpose to defy the State Govern
men; has ordered Gen. Thomas to use the
military in aid of the State Government.

the following singular manner, Being
asked by Mrs. Crooks to shoot a couple of
chickens for dinner, he took up a loaded
rifle, and desiring to know whether it was
properly charged, rested it upon the floor of
the porch, while with his foot he pushed
back the trigger, and placing the muzzle to
his mouth, commenced to blow into the bar
rel, with a view of ascertaining whether
the sir would pass through the touch-hole•
While in the act of bloowihg his foot slip

charged into his mouth, blowing out his
brains and carrying away a large portion of
his skull. His death was instantaneous.—
He leaves a father and mother, and many
friends, to mourn his untimely death.
BESIDES "pressing the financial issue"
the copperhead organs are coming down
on taxation. Their platform insists that
all species of property shall be equall taxed.
The real estate of any State is probably.
valued at from double to three-quarters as
much as the personal property.. The value
of the real estate of Pennsylvania in 1860
was $561,192,980; of personal, $158,060,-
355---and this is a fair example of all. As
it is, real estate, so much the largest, pays
nothing directly to national taxation. It
only renders a per cent. on the net income.
If the copphead platform is made effectual,
three-fourths of all the national taxes of the
State will be thrown on to the farms and
houses and homes of the people.

Genticeicn,--it glees me great pleasure to state that
my wife has derived great benefit from the use of
Coe's DyspepsiaCtire. She has Leen for a number of
years greatly troubled with Pyspepia, accompanied
by violent paroxysms of constipation which so pros
trated her that ebe was all the while, for months, un
able to do anything. She took, at your instance, Coe's
Dyspepsia Cure, and has derived GREAT BENEFIT
PROM IT, and 's now comparatively well. She re
gards this medicine as a great blessing.

Sta :—I take great pleasure in stating that, after
having suffered from dyspepsia for about fifteen years,
at some periods much more than others, I have been
entirely oared by the use of Coe's Dyspepsia Cure.—
My friends know that of late, years my mule has been
an extreme one. I had great suffering from eating
any kind of food, and on an average would vomit about
one-third of my meals,ln a soar indigestible mass.
When the severe atta cks would come, I would lose all
strength and become utterly helplesa Soma of the
attacks would be Bo severe that for days together I
rah ,
would retain any thing on my stomach, save a lit
tle d and 'tea, Poe years I knew not what it
rx
was to live consecutive beers wlthoilt intense
pain. Prom the time I took the first dose of this
medicine 1 - ceased lrandting, gradually all soreness
pausal away, and flesh and strength returned, end
ever since I have been able to eat any kind of food
set upon the table. Six months have now passed
without any symptoms of the return of the disease.
My MO waif cogsidered by all, even physicians, so
marvelous, that far a time it war feared is might be
fictitious; but I am now so well convinced, that I
hays not been merely relieved, but permanently
curd, that I can conscientiously recommend Coe's
Dyspepsia Cure to all vlctlmsof the Dyspep lK sia.

Whole Line to the PACIFIC wilt
be Completed in 1869.
The Company have ample means of which the Gov
ernment grants the right of way, and an necessary
timber and other materials found along the line of its
operations; also 12,800 acres of land to the mile, taken
in alternate sections on each side of Its road; also
United States Thirty-year Bonds, amounting to from
SIO,OOO to 148,000 per mile, according to the difficul
ties to be surmounted on the various auctions to be
built, for which it takes a second mortgagees security,
and it Is expected that not only the Interest, bat the
principal amonot may be paid In services rendered by
the Company in transporting troops, malls, AC.
TILE EARNINGS OP TILE UNION PACIFIC RAIL
ROAD, from its Way or Local Business only, durlog
the year ending June 30th, 1868, amounted to over
FOUR MILLION DOLLARS,
which, after paying all expense. was much more than
sufficient to pay the interest upon Its Bonds. Those
earnings are no indication of the vast through traffic
that must follow the opening of theline to the Nelda,
but they certainly prove that
First Mortgage Bonds

meant,
ARE ENTIRELY SECURE.
The Union Pacific Bonds run , thirty year% are fur
$l,OOO each. and have coupons attached. They bear
annual interest, payable on the Brat day. of January
and July at the Company', oak, in the City of New
York, at the rate of cis per cent. in gold. The princi
pal Is payable in gold ►t maturity. -The price le 1021
and at the present rate of gold, they pay • liberal In
come on their coat.
A very Important ottudderation in determining the
value of these bolds is the length ql tine they have M
run.
It is well known that ► long bond always commands
a much higher price than a short one. It Is safe to as
sume that &Meg the next thirty years, the rate of
interest in the United States will decline as it has done
in Europe, and we hare a right to expect that such
six per cent. securities u these will he held at as high
a premium nu those of this Gorernment, whkh, in
1867, were bought in at from 20 to 23 per cont. above
par, The export demand alone may produce t,bis
snit, and as tho lame of 'private corporation, they ars
beyond the reach of political action.
The Company believe that their Bonds, at the pre

the debt to advance the price at any time is reserved.
