IP ADVERTISING.—"That man who pays more for his 'rent than for his advertising does not know his business." This max im of an experienced and successful mer chant is incontrovertible. It matters less to have a fine store than that everybody should know where it Is and what is in IL ROBBERY.—On Tuesday night last, the Warehouse of BIGTE&M & Co., was robbed of a barrel of flour, sugar, coffee, and a large iron safe broken open and ionic) money taken, the amount not known.— The thief gained an entrance through a window on the second story. DEATH.—Our obituary column to-day records the death of JOHN Hoi.amcs,a well known colored man of this place, which took place on Sunday last. He has been the Janitor of Pennslyvania College, for about thirty years, serving during the larger Part of Dr. Kusrru's Presidency, and the entire Presidency of Dr. BAUGEI XR. The name of "Jack Hopkins" is a familiar one with the students and gradu ates of the Institution during this long period, his - integrity and fidelity com manding general conficnce. The Facul ty and Studer.ts, in a body, attended his funeral on Monday evening, the services being conducted by Dr. VALI:I.:TINE, President of the College, assisted by Profs. LIGHTNLNG STROKES.—Not only will the present season be a memorable one by reason of the intense heat and nu merous sun-strokes, but also an account of the large number of fatal electrical-dis charges. Our exchanges record au unus ual number of deaths from lightning— 'men, horses and cattle being, struck in The open field. A person struck directly by lightning can seldom be saved ; but when the injury is the result of rancue sion from a stroke of lightning, re'-action ary remedies promptly applied Nvill bring relief in most of instances. We_see it rec ommended, in such_ aises, to dash cold water rapidly over the body and keep up friction by active rubbing. A little pres ence of mind, and the prompt application of - simple remedies of this kind, until a physician can be called in, will often save life. MURDEROUS ATTACK.—We learn froth a recent number of the Marshall county (Missouri) Banner, that on the pre coding Tuesday a murderous attack on Mr. VINCENT BIERBOWER, the editor, was made by a notorious Rebel named By- RANT, armed with a bowie-knife, indict ing serious, if not fatal wounds. Mr. BIERBOWEIIIB a brother of WASHINGTON BIERBOWEB, Tobacconist of this place. He graduated at Dickinson College, Car lisle, in 1866, and went to Missouri, taking charge of the Marshall County Banner, an earnest ont-spoken Republican jour nal. His fearless denunciations. of the Rebel Democracy attracted the attention of the Ku-Klux, ,who posted one of their peculiar coffin and cross-bones bills oithis office a few nights preceding the assault, which is attributed by his friends to that murderous organization. Brusar, a no torious returned Rebel, was selected to do the work, who way-laid and attacked Bmanowzo on the street, the latter being unarmed. Nevertheless he succeeded in wrenching the knife from the a 4 gastsin, turned upon him and would probably at,. e, have despatched him bn •for the inter ference of other Rsbe ' nds of BYRANT. As It was, the 1 - as badly wounded. The Republicans 64 if North have little .conception of the outrages to which loyal men are subject in the Rebel and Border litates, where the true spirit of modern ' "Democricy" manifests itself in daily Insults, persecution and murder. As we are in the midst of the "het" season, it would be. well for all to understand something of the nature of sun-stroke, and what to & to aid any prostrated by, it. It is an sane lion of the nervous systerri associated with i vertigo and headache, the result of expos ure to great heat. Living in crowded arid poorly ventilated houses predisposes pet- I, sons to attack. Dr. HARRIS, of the New York Board'of Health, suggests, the fol lowing brief precautions and treatment : (I.) When exposed to excessive heat, the j natural perspiration or sweating must not be checked. Let the sweat flow, and do upt throw off all the flannel garments. (2.) Wash the head and neck frequently in cold water, and, if exposed in the sun or in any very hot place, wear upon the top of the heed, under a hat or otherwise, a light handkerchief, or other thin folds of cloth, wet' with cold water. Remember that the cheek and neck must be kept cool, and also be free from the pressure of tight clothing. (3.) if headache, dizziness, a feel ing of tightness across .. ate forehead, a fail ing of sight, or a feeling 'of weakness and prostration ("givin g out") occurs, let the person immediately go to a cool place and lie down with the back and the feet cov7 ered, and have a few quarts of cold water poured slowly upon the head and the sides of the neck. If the symptoms aro not at once relieved, send for the nearest good physician. (4.) What to do until the physician cones.—lf the patient is still sweating, let them drink freely of cold black tea or coffee ; tea is best. But, if sweating has ceased, there is very great danger ; then, the head, face, neck and entire chest should be rapidly sponged with ice water, and a bag of pounded ice, well covered with a towel, should be kept under the head and the back of the neck; Give a mixture of the carbonate of am:- monia thartshorn) and muriate of am monia, eight or ten grains of each, in water, every ten or fifteen minutes, until the . physician comes, or until the patient ral-: lies and sweats Enfeebled, intemperate, poorly fed, over led andirritable persons are most in dan ger of the fatal effect of heat. It is general ly supposed that all the essences of flow ers aro produced by distillation. This is far from being the case; some of them would be scriovisly injured by such a pro cess, and are caught and fixed, as it were, by what may be termed a fin trap. Ih the flower season at Cannes (France) plates of glass are thinly covered with clarified in odorous fat; upqn or under this fat the flowers are placed, and the power this sub- Stance has to absorb and retain perfumes is astonishing. On these sheets of glass the most delicate odors are thus fixed almost as securely as, on the collodian ; prepared plates, the most delicate pictures are retained. In this way the jessamine, the violet, the tuberose, the orange per fumes travel' across France, and arrive here as puro as the day they were given I.,vax from arc 11,71, Ct . S . tiSCIS raVl.♦ cn. emancipa' ion of the odor from its impris onment is very simple ; the fat, cut into small cubes, is placed in spirits of wino and the delicate essence immediately de serts the coarse fat for more spiritual sol- Vent. Mr. Piesse, in his interesting work on perfumery, says that, "while cultiva tors of gardens spend thousands for the gratification of the eye, they altogether neglect the nose. Why should wo not grow flowers 'for their odors as well as their colors?" and we may add that - ladies ' may utilize some ()flour own waste gar den perfumes very easily. Heliotrope, the lily of the vatic, honeysuckle, myrtle, clove, pink, and wallflower perfumes, such as wo get In the shops, are made up odors cunningly contrived froth other flowers. Yet they may be made pure with a little trouble, For instance, do you want gen uine heliotrope pomade? If there is a glue pot in the house, and it happens to be clean, fill it with clarified fat, set it near the hot house fire, or any other lire, just to make the fat liquid, and throw in' as many heliotrope flowers as possible; let them remain for '2-1 hours, strain off the fat and add fresh ones; repeat this proc;ess for a week, and the fat will have become a pomade a /a heliotrope. • The same process may be gone through with all other flowers mentioned. A lady may in this manner make her oWn perfume, and. we .may add, in the words of Mr. Please, "one that she cannot obtain for lo've or money at the perfumer's." The proprietors will spare no means or pains to make it a reliable and uniform article. It in superior to Peruvian Guano, became It is MORE LASTING IN ITS EFFECT and EQUAL TO IT ON THE FIRST CROP. It does not over-stimulate the soil, as most of the fertilizers In the market do, and leave the land after gathering the first crop in a worse condition titan before using it, but It remains an active fertilizer in the soli, and continuo year af- ter year to show itself on every crop that is put in the laud. The Conowago Phosphate contains a large percent age of Ammonia and Pheephoric acid, which are es sential elements to vegetable food.
