LECTURE.—The e foUrt/Cof the course of
Lectures In Agricultural Hall on Friday
evening Nat, tamed out , not to be a "Leo
ture,"—Rev. Dr. 'Siouan, of Baltimore, hav
ing determined to vary the exercises by
gig/lug *series of Readings, which, by rea
son 43f novelty and capital rendering of the
selections, made quite a favorable kaffires
sion on the large audience attracted by the
Des. reputation as a public lecturer. A.-
mong other . selections, Dr. Mortars read
from Henry VIII, Scene 1, the interview be
tween Cardinal Wolsey and Cromwell ;
from Julius Carsar, Act 1, Scene 2, the pass
age in.which Casabas urges Brutus to unite
in the conspiracy to assassinate Omar ;
Poe's - " Raven," "Sam, Weller's Valentine,"
"The Sleeping Sentinel," to. Wolsey and
Sam Weller's Valentine were especially well
rendered, the former evincing a line concep
tion of the poet's idea of blighted ambition,
and the latter exhibiting the Dr's. ]seen
rel
ish for the humorous. I
The next Lcidture will be delivered - on
Friday evening, by Rev. Dr. McCitow, of
Baltimore, by many regarded the most elo
quent pulpit orator of the monumental city.
His subject will be : "Industry—its Trials
and Triumphs."
ORPHAN'S HOME.—A plesusant recep
tion took place at the National Orphans'
Homestead, on Saturday afternoon, the large
School Room being 'crowded with - visitors.
An illuminated motto, "God bless our
Home," spanned the entrance to the main
building, while the School Room proper
was gaily decked with National flags. The
Orphans, 60 in number (35 • girls and 25
boys), were seated on an elevated platform
—the girls wearing blue dresses, with white
sashes and shields with the names of the
various States emblazoned thereon, the boys
wearing either shields or miniature flags.—
Above the platform was suspended a large
card with the words "Wesmitoxorr-1732,"
wreathed in green, while on either side of
the room were portraits of Weslowerrort
and Gwerrr. The e decorations were all in
good taste and reflected much credit on the
Committee who superintended them. The
exercises were opened with prayer by Prof.
FzEmzit, followed by a Poetical Recitation,
entitled "Salutation to the Flag," the pro
duction of Miss LATuaze, in which four of
the children participated. Maj. CLEaTON,
the New England Agent of the Home, read
are essay on the "Boyhood of Washington,"
and Lieut. NORTON an original poem by
Miss LATIMER, "The Drunkard's Wife."—
his was followed byan allegorical tableaux
of the 13 original States, entitled "Tri
bute to Washington," an original poetical
production by Mies LATIMER, in which the
States were reßresented by an equal num
ber of the children—all uniting ini , the cho
rus,
"Joined hand in hand the new States cone,
To bleu' the name of Washington."
. Eemarkr3 were made_ by Prof. FErtatzu,
and' 1).
.McCorranoav, Esq., while Maj.
CLEETON gave some interesting details of his
experience as Agent of the Home in the
New England States. The exercises were
interspersed with frequent singing by the
children, closing with the national hymn,
"America, 'tis of thee."
The'Home has now under its care 60 Or
phans of the fallen heroes of the Republic,
and is managed by Lieut. NORTON, who
served in the 153 th New Yorkltegiment, as
sisted by Mrs. NORTON, Mrs. HUMMIBTON,
Miss CLAYTON, MIMI LATIMER, and Mr. J. C.
BURNS. After the exercises, thet buildings
and grounds were thrown open to the visi
tors—everything being in excellent order.—
We are under obligations to Mrs. ROBERT
HORNER,*( WllO takas an active interest in
the Home,) for sundry attentions during
our visit.
At the close of the exercises, the Zouaves,
under Capt. Norms, made their appearance
on the grounds and drilled fora half hour or
more, in presence of the Orphans, much to
their gratification.
CONSUMPTlON.—Notwithstanding the
many articles advertised to cure Consump
tion, we do not believe, when seated too long
it can tot be cured. But we do know of
hundreds of cases where persons were sup
posed to be suffering under that fatal disease,
whd have become perfectly well and robust
from the use of Speer's Port Grape Wine.
Many times people for years waste and at last
die from diseases of the kidneys or glands,
when tb ey were supposed to have and were
treated for Consumption. A long-continued
affection of the kidneys, however, may even
tuallreesult in Consumption. Speer's wine,
used alone, or taken with a fresh raw egg, or
new - milk, daily, 'has been found to be an ex
cellent remedy, and has the reputation of
rendering a perfect cure for Consumption.—
Merlical Times.
The wine certainly contains valuable pro
perties ; let our physicians and invalids try it.
To be had of druggists. feb.26,lt

"In the spring of 18581 was severely afflicted ~with a
hard, dry cough, with its usual accompaniment' oT night
meats, completely prostrating my nervous system, and
producing such a debilitated state of health that, after
trying medical aid to no purpose, I had given up.all hopes
of ever recovering, as had also my friends. At this stage
of matters I was prevailed upon th rough the influence of
a neighbor to try Whiter's Balsam of Wild ChM-ry, and,
before using two bottlee, the effect was almost inagieal.
My cough entirely left me, the night sweats deserted me,
hope once more elated my depressed spirits, and soon I
had attained my wonted strength and vigor. Thus has
this Balsam, Si has often been remarked by persona con.
versant with the above facts, literally snatched me from
the yawning grave. You are at liberty to use this for the
benefit ofthe afflicted."
