IPOPPINGt CORN.
And there 4 they sat a popping corn,
John Stiles and Suaan Cutter ;
Alin Stiles was, stont as any ox,
And Susan fat as butter.
And there they sat and shelled the•ootn t
And rakecLand stirred the fire,
And talked of different kind of ears,.
And hitched their chairs up nigher.
Then Susan she the popper shook,
Then John he 'book th• popper,
Till both their faces grew as red
Aaeaucepans made of copper.
And theri they shelled, and popped and ate,
All kinds of fun a-poking.
And be haw-hawed at her remarks,
And she laughed at his joking.
And still they popped, and still they ate,
(John's mouth Waxlike a hopper),
And stirred the fire and sprinkled salt,
And shook and shook the,popper.
The clock struck nine, the clock struck ten
And still the corn kept popping;
It struck eleven end then struck twelve,
And still no signs of stopping.
And John he ateand Sue she thought—
The corn did pop and patter,
Till John cried out, "Thepcorn's afire!
Why; Suiten, witat:a the matter ?"
Said she, "John Stiles, it's one o'clock;
You'll die of indigestion
I'm sick of all this popping corn--
Why don't you pop the question?"
PROFIT OF SEEPING BEES.
1 With the right attention and tltill, this 004
_
cupation as pleasant und profitable as fitly
connected with r.tml life. But, like all °Metz,
success comes after diligent efforts only, and
. failure attends attempts where there is a want
of thoroughness. Mrs. Ellen S. Tupper con
.."\-tributes in The Kansas Farmer her experi
ence and estimate of profit in bee-keeping:
"As a proof that bee-keeping, as a business,
• pays as well or better than any branch of
horticulture, I would state that-I am now of
fet-ed for my bees $5OO in cash. It is not yet
six years since I paid $2O for the four stands
with which I commenced the business. I
have never bought a hive since. So this is
the increase of my capital in five seasons, say
ing nothing of the bees, honey, and wax sold
in the meantime, or the pletisure derived from
the business. Now that I have so many hires,
I find the profit increasing every year, with
ott: requiting more time and "labor than I be
stowed on a few. So far from there being
any danger of overstocking, I find my bees.
have done better the two path poor seasons
than malty have done where there were but a
few hives kept in one place ; anc I am con
vinced that, where they are managed rightly,
hundreds of colonies will do well where one
wilL To acnomplish this, however, it is in
dispensable to have them . strong and Tigomus
In spring, that they may take advantake of the
whole honey harvest.''
Mr. Jasper fiazen of Albany, contributes to
the Country Gentleman a short report'of his
experiments with the Italian and native bees,
which is valuable:
"In the summer of 1860 I commenced some
experiments with bees, using hives of my
own construction, with-a design of securing
the greatest amount of honey. In the years
1860, '6l, and '62 my hives averaged from
thirty to forty pounds of surplus honey. In
1864 the bees in thirteen hives gave seven
hundred and ninety-seven pounds of surplus
homiy, averaging sixty-one and four-thirteenth
pound to each hive. The present season I
had eight colonies, in hives of my own de
sign and manufacture, which gave six.swarms
and five hundred pounds of surplus honey.—
In a different kind of hives, in which I placed
four swarms last season, I have this season
four new swarms and five hundred pounds of
surplus honey. One of these last colonies was
Italian bees, and three of them natives or
black bees. The Italian colony gave two
swarms and one hundred- and six pounds of
surplus honey; one of the native colonies
gave two swarms and ninety-nine pounds of
surplus honey ; one gave one hundred and
twenty-three pounds of surplus honey, but no
.swarms; and the other one hundred and
seventy-four of honey, but no swarm ; averag
ing to each hive one swarm and one hundred
and twenty-five pounds of honey. The ex
periment showing that in ihe last class of
bees the production was double of that in the
first class."
A gentleman living in Texas possessed 350
hives of bees, and the yearly income there
from was over 14000. They required but
little care, the v7Eole not over two weeks'
work in the course of Alia year.
A HEMMER emtity, N. Y., dairyman esti
mates that 45 cows Squire 100 tons of hay to
winter them through.
A GERMAN who went tcr Kelly's Island,
Lake Erie, in 1853, with $6OO, to grow
grapes, is now worth over ,50,000.'
J. W. GRIBWALD, of Weithersfield, Conn.,
informs the New York Horticutturist t h at
he his preserved his trees from the canker-
Worm by piling coal-ashes' around their
trunks.
A Coszatericrr paper states that a farmer
in that State built a barn thirty-tyro" years
ago, and put a crop of hay into it the same
year. Last spring was the first. time the lost
of it was distributed, the call being so liind
that it bad to come out. It was as sweet and
- _bright as any ever brought to market.
br the Niagara River there is an Wand of
120 acres, where peaches never fail. On
both sides the w Ater, flowing rapidly, never
freezes, so the trees are not Jailed with in

was purchased for $t an acre: Last year the
crop of peaches alone sold for $7,500.
POISONP) 13arsP.—Sheep poisoned with
laurel have been saved by applying crushed
onions under the forelegs of the animals ; and
two . or three doses of Thompeonian Compo

mixed with 4 table spoonful of molasses,
have also been used with apparent benefit.
A New grass is springing up in the South
ern States. 'lt appears to be a dwarf clover,
is very thick set, covering the earth with a
beautiful caspet of green. It is l much relished
by cattle, and is a complete exterminator of
Bermuda, joint, sedge, , and other grasses. In
Middle Georgia it is very 'abundant, and is at
tracting much attentiun.._
A Ilseses correspondent says "Kansas
river bottoms in the vicinity Of Topeka, the
capital of the state, cannot be beaten this
year. One farmer has commenced basking,
and (has far his corn has averaged one hun
dred and twelve bushels to the acre. He has
over forty aces that will average one hundred
wag* and 40 - is now selling it for sixty
cents per bushel."

EARNINGS OF THE COMPANY
At present, the profile of the Company are derived
only from its local traffic, but this is alt eedy much more
than sufficient to tety tie interest on all the Bonds the
Company can issue, if nut smother mile were built_ It is
not doubted that when the road is completed the through
traffic of the only line connecting the Atlantic and Pacific
States will be large beyond precedent, and, as therewill
be no competition. it can always lie done at profitable
rates.
It will be noticed that the Union Pacific Railroad is, In
fact, a Government work, built under the supervision of
Govensment officers, and to a large extent with govern
ment money, and that its bonds are issued under Gov
ernment direct tan. It :is believed that mb similar secur
ity is so carefully guarded, and certainly no other la
based upon a larger or more valuable property. As the

THE GREAT CHOLERA
PREVENTATIVE.
Zingari Bitters.
WONwERFUL REMEDY was discovered an
introduced about twenty years ago by Dr. B. Cheap
sue, an eminent Egyptian physician.
Ile hail long seep and felt the want of seine remedy
which would strike at the ro tof distooe, awl pre
vent much of the suffering which the human famtlY was
then compelled to endure.
This great questien was presented to Lis mind every
day in vivid colors &she moved among the 9.,. :tuck!) ing,
and observed the inefficiency of nearly hill tlm renualita
then in use. Thus lie was led to think and evi , eriment ;
and after ten years' study and labor. lie presented to his
fellow-man the wonderful Zing inc i Witcos. The ettert ut
this preparation in the prevention and cure et dies
eraa so marvel:our and astonishing, that the root flatter
ing marks of royal favot were bestowed upon hire who
discovered it. 1114 1/ - .tine was placed Upol the Rol I of
Nobles:and a gold medal with the follow ing inset Ito ion
—Dr. S.Chenpsus, the'Pub lie Iteuefacter—wahpreSellted
to him by the Viceroy.
The preparation has been used in several epidemics of
cholera, both as a preventiviand curative me a sure. and
with such great success, that it has been inti L. 1110,1 uo to
nearly all the general hospitals of the old woll.l.
The obi saying that au ounce of prevention worth a
durand of cure, applies with tuarvelhrus ti,rce to cholera.
trill therefore any remedy that will ruts. t rs
this terrible disease should he free freelt and per.tstcntly
lard.
All pathologist. now agree that the ch vi era acts
in the system through the blood. and that any combina
tion which acts on the excretory organs. and keeps them
in working order, must prevent a sualcieut stcdulnitist ion
.Ithe poison to exert its terrible effects on the organism.
ibis is true not only of cholera. but -1 nearly all other
.naladies. especially the different firms of fever.
The Zinged Bitters is just ouch a remedy a. the ab•ve
conditions require. It acts on the orgsns of e x eret ,,,,,,
and secretion, keeping up a perfect balance between
them. This Bitters is cotnposed entirely of ns,ts cud
herbs, so nicelyconcocted that every organ is acted upon
slut put in tone. Its taste is pleasant and its effects
prompt and lasting.
Numerous cases of the following diseases have been
cared by it: Cholera, Diarrhtea, Dysentery, 6crortila,
Typhoid and Typhus Fever. Fever. Ague. Nervous De
bility, Anaemia. Female I rregulari ties. Dyspepda.l lat
