Congress has temporarily disfranchised
those whites who once took an oath to
support the Constitution and then broke
it. But the number is not large, and
comprises generally the worst men of the
State who mere largely responsible for

&w days ago it was anntiunced that "000
'canes of the Union Pacific Railroad had been
- - .. olliiplated west froniOnashi;" fliad the bare
lilationnqement was made the text for many
interesting facts concerning the history of
this great national enterprise, and the won
derful `rapidity • With which its construction
had been carried eorward. The public had
bardirbelinn to - appreciate Alie fact that Milli
thousand miles ,of railroad had been built in
two years into and through what had been an
untenanted waste, before the telegraph told of
the celebration of thn completion of the 51 ith
mile, and.the public welcome given to the lo
comotive by the City of Cheyenne, which two
months before had no existence, but which
now numbers its inhabitants by thousands.
This fact Was also proudly commented upon
as an illustration of the restlesi vigor with
which this Railroad was being built, but
while the people have been reading these con
gratulatory paragraphs, the tracklayers have
kept steadily at work, and the last bulletin an
nounces the completion of 525 miles. Ilow
much greater distance will be accomplished
before this article shall be seen by our readers,
we will not venture to predict.
The whole history of this Railroad is won
derful. It has the advantage of such liberal
national aid as was never before given to any
private undertaking; its officers and promo
ters are men of national reputation and large
financial experience ; the road is being built
under the largest railroad contract of which
we have any record ; the security offered its
bondholders exceeds that of any other similar
loan, as these bonds constitutes first mortgage
upon the entire road, while the Government
accepts a second lien as its own security for
advances, the amount of its business when the
through line shall be completed must of ne
cessity be enormous, and its local traffic and
profits upon the portion now in operation are
unprecedented. We are sure that the further
information concerning this National Rail
road which will be found in another column,
will be read with sepecial interest.
THE' HOLIDAYS.—The approach of the
Holidays is unmistakably indicated by the
large stocks of new goods to be seen at the
several. Confectionery and Variety Stores in
cur place. Prominent. among these is the
lately enlarged establishment of J. M.
Nan, in Baltimore street., nearly opposite to
FAHNESTOCKS . Store. Noted for good taste
and enterprise in his business, he has this
time really outdone himself—having laid in,
when in the cities, such a stock as is rarely
seen in a country town, and not often found
iu any single establishment in the cities.—
His Confectionery articles embrace every
thing, from the cheapest home manufacture
to the finest French ; of Toys, his variety is
a' most endless, embracing many novelties;
whilst of Mantle and other Parlor Orna
ments, he has an assortment of which he is
specially proud, and which he feels must be
appreciated by an intelligent community.—
Whilst his articles aro fine, they are cheap—
quite as cheap as they can be had in the cit
ies. He invites everybody—male and fe
male--old and young—from town and evun
try--to call arid examine his immense sod
attractive stock, and then satisfy their Holi
day wants. Every taste can be gratitiod
and every pocket suited. it
CHRIS KRUNG LE having established las
headquarters at E. H. M r N"Nr(i tr"s. in Chain
hersburg street, next door to the Keystone
House, that is the place to find anythingand
everything suitable P . m Christmas presents.
Mr. MINIVIGH has an unusually large assort
ment of Holiday goods, which cannot rail to
please every taste, and win golden opinions
- (rorn his numerous customers. All he asks
iSt c hat the public shall give him a call and
exatnine the thousands of novelties he ex
tribitand the buying part will be sure to
follow. \ \Such beautiful goods at such mod
erate prides, must induce any number of
sales. In Confectionery- and other sweet
things he can't be beat—neither in Toys,
Parlor Games, Holiday Books, Ac., Sc., Sze..
which he could string out to the length of
half a dozen newspaper columns. But as
this cannot be done, he must content him
self with asking everybody to come and see
for themselves, assured that the satisfaction
to be derived from an examination of his
varied assortment will repay the trouble of
a visit. It
THE BEST THING YET.—We have re
crittly had sufficient evidence of the excel
lence of Mr. Speer's Port Grape Wine, which
not only convinces us that a'l we can say in
its p. aise is deserved, but that we are really
conferring a favor on ourreaders in advising
them to use it. The wine is pire grape
wine, entirely unmixed, and the Most, agree
able and delicious in flavor of any we ever
tasted. Of its medicinal qualities, we enter
tain the very . jiighest opinion, and upon the
evidence of our own observation. Three
bottles of this wine have nearly effected a
perfect cure in the case of our little boy,
who has been seven years afflicted with in
continence of the urine. A great number of
remedies have been tried without benefit,
and the most eminent physicians consulted
with a like result. Speer's Port Grape Wine
is effecting it cure. We have iven this tes
timony without the knowledge of Mr.
Speer in the hope that others may be induc
ed to try the virtues of this wine.--Ifr.
