when the key accidentally slippial and the

inflicted e wound of about flve , inches in

TENNESSEE CossznvArrsst.-11tkes become
the fashion to decry the "Brownlow Govern
ment" as a miserable despotism, and to des
cribe the Rebels in Tennessee as the most pa
tient, abused, and long-suffering people on the
lace of the earth. •Now this is all bosh. Af
ter Lee's surrender the Rebels returned to
their homes, regained immediate possession
of ail their property, except their slaves, and'
have been enjoying undisturbed possession of
It ever _since ; and at the very 'first general
election that occurred they showed their ap
preciation of the generosity with which they,
had been treated by taking possession of near
ly all the offices of trust and profit in the State,
which the/ are ifolding now. The mayors
and recorders of our chess, boards of aldermen,
she/if:Es, county courtclerks, magistrates, con
stables, jail keepers, qte., etc_, are all, or near.
ly all either returned Rebel soldiers, or stay
at home Rebel sympathizers. These offices,
in many oases, were filled by men who bad
not yet' dtiffed - the gray uniform; and yet
these returned Rebels, with fat salaries, cry
themselves hoarse about the despotism of the
"Brownlow Government." The truth is, if
we may except the State Government, with
its,low beggarly offices, the Radicals have
newt to nothing in the State. They are stan
ding afar off, while the Rebels pocket the fat
.
salanes, and howl over their wrongs. And
what ars their wrongs ? Simply this : that
they are sot allowed to take control of the
State Government. When Tennessee was re
admitted into the Union it was the understan
ding that the State government should remain
in the hantis of loyal men until equal rights
should be established. William G. Brownlow
is faithful to his pledges. That is his crime.
Nothing more.
Ilceszy.—Men work for it, beg for it, steal
for it, starve for it, and die for it ;and all the
while, from the cradle to the grave, nature
and God are thundering in bur ears the soh
emn question: "What shall it profit a man if
he gains the whole world and lose his own
soul?" The madness for money is the strong
est arid loweilt of the passions ; it is the insa
taite litulock of the human heart, before
whoa ransorseloss altar all the finer attributes
of humanity are sacrificed. It makes mer
chandise of all that is sacred in the human
affections; and even traffics in the awful 'sol
emnities of tla6 eternal.
IT will be a good thing for the brokers and
bankers if Shorewood gets to be Judge of the
Supreme Court. The first thing he and his
Democratic colleagues will do will be to break
(limn the National Banks, and put Gover
ment bends and notes at a ruinous discount.
This will afford fine pickings for the brokers,
and wild sat banki on the old system will
start up in every city, town and village.—
Bank note lists and counterfeit detectives will
be in greater demand than ever about those
times.
