- Tux Pennsylvania Steel Works, coni•erting
molten iron into steel in no minutes, by the
Bessether process, are in' actiN = ,t operation.—
The steel, as produced apt these works IS re
markable for its toughness. If is eminently
adapted for rails. The rags which have been
manufactured from it have been shown, by
rarefnl experimeint, to wear twenty-four times
as long as iron rails, while they cost but twice
as much.
There are from twenty-eight to thirty men
employed at the works, the larger portion'in
the converting room, and others in breaking
pig iron and the removal of the ingots from
the moulds.
Bessemer steel, as produced at the works
will bear 150,000 lbs. per square inch. The
• very best Pennsylvania, bar iron, which is un
rivalled in tbe world, will otnly carry 5(1,000
to 1,0,000 lbs. per square Mgt. l tiis exhibits
fully the advantage of the steel fer the iron
rail, and the- great

which is about-to be'made In the construction
and repair of railroads in the United States.
Three million dollars: worth of steel rails,
and $7. - ,0,000 worth of tire for locomothT,
were bought in EuroKlait year for Amerieo
railroad companies. This material was made
out of ore and fuel far inferior to that of which
Pennsylvania has hundreds of millions of tons
lying in her iimuntains. only requiring the
game energy and skill displayed by the Penn
_
syrrania steel company to develop and manu
facture. But free trade nnw ~cianltonts this
entA•prise. and the people are aske7. instead
of patronizing home industry, to support the
forei 'producer at the expense of the home
manutakurer. An immense rollin! , mill to
operate in connection with the Steel Works.
