The mimeographed handout, deal-
ing with the incredible volume of
water which the PWA apparently
has gathered together here and
there about the country, was de-
livered to editors early in January,
but was not to be released for pub-
lication until February 1.
Events of the weeks leading up
to the publication date leave the ob-
server a little uncertain to
whether the PWA, with its custom-
ary genius, was able to reach into
the future and draw a few neat
analogies, or merely trying to
scare the pants off us.

The United States now has com-
pleted or under way PWA projects
which will impound about 22 trillion’
(22,000,000,000,000) gallons of water
for irrigation, power, navigation,
flood control, domestic, and indus-
trial purposes. All of these many
projects have been either started,
continued, or completed with public
works administration federal or
nonfederal allotments.
Water use and control was recog-
nized as a major field for PWA ef-
fort at the inception of the agency.
Great areas of the country have
been handicapped by inadequate
water supply.
The Mississippi valley committee
of the national resources commit-
tee, described the situation in this
gether. The people cannot reach
the highest standard of well-being
unless there is the wisest use of
land and water . . Flood control,
low-water control, navigation, pow-
er, water supply, sanitation, and
erosion are integral parts of the pic-
ture.”

than Lake Mead at Boulder dam,

of 19,412,000 acre feet, which is al-

width of 16 miles, and a shore line

Water impoundments within the

ance of the public works adminis-
tration, have taken place for five
principal reasons: Water for human

reached stupendous proportions.
Until June of 19833, the Assuan
dam and reservoir in the Nile of
Egypt was the largest of its kind in
the world. It held about 1.32 tril-
«ion gallons of water fresh out of
the mountains. Figured into acre
feet, which means spreading the wa-
ter into a sheet one foot thick, As-
suan’s capacity was 4,040,200 acre
feet,
Then came Boulder dam in the
Colorado river. It was developed
to store 30,500,000 acre feet—more
than seven times as much as the
Assuan’'s. Norris dam in the Clinch
river near Knoxville, Tenn., which
was started with PWA funds and
constructed by the Tennessee Val-
ley authority, followed. This was
to have a capacity of 3,502,132 acre
feet, and in addition to Boulder
dam, it was an outstanding chal-
lenge America offered to Egyptian
supremacy until work started on
Persons in that arid
area had never seen a lake until
man made Lake Mead.
Engineers point out that such
dams as Fort Peck, Tygart dam
floods and insuring navigation all
the year around for potential river
ports which have been hitherto land-
locked.
May Help Wells,
Scientists approve huge water im-
poundment because it will be ex-
tremely beneficial toward checking
the rapid decline of America's un-
derground water supply. The re-
cently retired Major William Bowie,
chief of the division of geodesy,
coast and geodetic survey, who also
estimated the change in the ocean
level, cited Fort Peck as an ex-
ample. When the 10412009 acre
feet of water is held there, the
natural seepage into the ground
may go far toward restoring arte-
sian well supplies. A recent sur.
vey made by engineers of South
Dakota revealed that the head of
artesian wells was sinking at a rate
of two to twenty feet annually,
