BABY’'S LIBRARY
ILLIE BROWNIE had gone again

~harles Norman was now about a year
old—well, he was a little more than a
year old, and strange as It may seem
3e was collecting books,
“I'm golng to have a big library,” he
told Billie Brownie. “Of course, |
won't bother about reading now, and
then I'll have to be read to before I'll
rend to myself. At present I'm too
busy with other matters.”
“What other matters?” Blille Brownlie
inquired,

That's one of my reasons, AnNyway.
Another is that it 18 expected of me

other things 1 have to keep me busy,

time, I have any number of beautiful
garments—Jjust quantities of clothes,
If It were not that I am so busy and
that a baby would be out of place
up a store and I'd have everything
for customers with babies.
“But at the same time I don't need
the money from a store, for I've got a
{ bank account. Dear me, yes, Billie
Brownle, I've a bank account!
“And then some one gave me a
book. Well, my mother showed it to
me and 1 grinned and made little
‘talky sounds,’ she sald, and she also
told me I'd been especially good after
receiving it. She sald books made
people contented and happy and
pleased.
“And she gald 1 thanked the one
who sent me the book by sending a
‘friendly and gummy grin, much fist

all this. I do love the wiy my moth

“But I'll tell you, Billle Brownle,
the book itself wasn't anything much.
It gave my mother an idea, though, to
start a library for me while 1 was
young so I'd have quite a fine one
when 1 grew up, and while growing
up.
“So 1 have a library and quite a
number of books now, When I'm a
bigger boy 1 shall just have the best
time In the world with my library.
“It is a good idea to start a library
when one Is only a baby. It gives one
a good running start!
“And now I must bid you a polite

son was creating more crooks to make
his play fit for Broadway.
“ AT TWENTY-ONE 1 sold my first
play. Cohan and Harris were
the buyers. When the production
date for It came around it became
evident that something had te be
done to It to make it presentable for
Broadway. For a long time we
worked over It, putticg In more
crooks, more detectives, more heroes,
more shots until the stage was
reached when the opinion became
unanimous that te leave the play
alone would be the best policy. It has
been left alone ever since.~~JOHN
HOWARD LAWSON."
TODAY: Mr. Lawson ig one of the
most discusBed dramatists In this
country. A few seasons ago his first
play to reach Broadway, “Roger
Bloomer,” was produced and at once
caused a flurry of agitated criticism,
due to its total unconventionality,
“Roger Bloomer” ran ten days on
Broadway, then a band of intellectu-
als took It over to Greenwich village
where It played ten weeks before it
went Into seclusion. Later it was
published in book form.
Mr. Lawson's second play to be
produced was “Processional.” This
work was given its debut by the
Theatre guild and never was there
80 sharply divided or more violent
criticism known In New York than
that which greeted “Processional.”
Half the leading metropolitan critics
sald Mr. Lawson was a genius: the
other half said something was wrong,
One even questioned Mr. Lawson's
reason. The audiences, too, were
equally divided, but the outstanding
fact was that those who liked “Pro.
cessional” idealized it and lifted it
to the highest pinnacle of art: whilg
those who didn’t like It hated it most
decisively.
“Processional” was a play that told
a story of the life of miners In West
Virginia, but was set In a framewark
of jazz, thus striving to weld the In.
ner drama of American life with the
reckless flippaney and galety of the

WHAT IS LIFE?

ence,
While It Is Impossible to either ex-
piain, define or destroy life, do
know something of its origin. Life
can only come from life. The rock Is
dead because It has no environment to
which it Is subject, It cannot commu-
nicate with the life that is about it
The tree, on the other hand, lives be-
cause it can come in contact with the
world of nature that lles about it. It
receives the requisites for
its life from sun, the atmosphere

with a larger environment. It pos
