secrete a mucous substance which
serves to keep the back of the throat
moist.
Being at the back of the mouth,
they are subject to all sorts of Infec-
tions and Irritations, so that they
readily become Inflammed especially
in childhood. If any pus germs lodge
in the erypts and develop there, they
cause an inflammation, or tonsilitis
or an abscess, which Is popularly
known as “quinsy.” As the tonsil is
bound down tightly by bands of mem-
brane, any swelling, either In a sim-
ple tonsilitis or In quinsy is extremely
painful. Both quinsy and tonsilitis
are acute conditions which appear, de-
velop and pass away in the course of
a few days or weeks. Children with
chronie, enlarged or Inflammed tonsils
suffer much inconvenience on account
of them, so that present-day practice

as they interfere with breathing, swal-
lowing and articulation.
In many people who do not have
