$2,000 Forest Fire Damage in Gregg
Township.
A forest fire recently burned over 150
acres of State land and about 100 acres
of privately owned land in Gregg town-
ship, Centre county, according to a re-
port sent to the Pennsylvania Depart-
ment of Forestry by [District Forester
Bartschat, of Milroy. The flames were
fanned by a high wind, but they were
finally controlled by Rangers Smith and
McKinney and a crew of fifty men, The
fire started in the vicinity of Summit
road, and the damage is estimated at
$2,000,
Forester Bartschat has begun erection
of an observation tower on the top of
Strong Mountain, and a telephone line
will be strung between the ‘tower and
the Forester's headquarters at Milroy.
The tower and the telephone line will
provide increased protection against
forest fires in the Penn Forest District.
Fishermen were out in full force in
Forester Bartschat’s territory on the
opening day of the season. In the
Paddy Mountain region there were so
many sportsmen that old woodsmen
said it looked as though a new lumber
job had been opened.
L. F. Yeager, who is serving as a
forest fire observer on the tower at Big
Poe Mountain in the Curtin Division of
the Penn State Forest, has reported
considerable game in his neighborhood.
Recently he observed a herd of eight
deer near the tower. Many pheasants
are in that locality, also, he reported,
! The Boy Scouts of Lewistown recent-
ly planted some forest trees near their
camp sites in New Lancaster Valley and
in Faust Valley.

A Chance To Secure Black Walnut
Seedlings.
The Cgntre County Conservation As-
sociation has received from the State
Forestry Department at Harrisburg
3000 seedlings of the Black Walnut tree,
Itis planned to have these trees planted
on the State Forest. In years to come
+ they will furnish food for squirrels and
other forest animals, The black walnut
tree requires a moist, rich soil for best
development. It should be planted on
the bottom land along streams in open
spots for black walnut will not grow in
the shade. Hunting clubs and others
who wish to plant this tree tear their
cabins should apply to the chairman of
the Forestry and Game Committee in
their Conservation District or to Profes.
