HOG FOR BALE. ~Full Chesterwhite hog
Frait Trees for Shade,
This vear, for obvious reasons aseo-
olated with the ir fluence of war upon
all forme of endeavor, thoss who
want to eet out shade treee, turn their
minds to trees which will produce
something, says Professor Arthur W.
Cowell, of the Pennsylvania Stale
College. There is something to be
sald in favor of fruit trees along the
Lincoln Highway or the country lane
or the lane to your front door, but the
purpose of a shade tree and the limite-
tions of all epecies of trees shoul’ be
considered before giving up the cher.
ished American alm fora cherry tree.
Oar list of shade trees suitable for
highway purposes ls much shorter
than that of lawn shade trees, The
ideals are different, On the lawn use
a8 many low-branched flower and
fruit-producing species as may be de-
sired, bearing in mind that most fruit
trees must be pruned and sprayed rege
ularly to produce fruit; that such
pruning to a great degree ir jures their
aesthetic value and that foliage blue-
stained with Bordeaux mix ture is not
attractive.
We are thus limited to a very few
species of orchard tress which might
be used sparingly as shade tree
sabatitutes. They are for highway use
the sweet cherriege—sunrject to borers—
life about forty years; pears—sulj-ct
to sudden blight—life twenty years,
For lawne, we usy enlarge that list
to include the sour cherries, plume,
peaches, quinces, which are desirable
bushes, crab-apple and apricots. As
pone of these are long-lived, dignified
protective trees, handsome and inspir-
ing in form and dignity, it is question-
able how far the idea may be carried
of substituting orchard trees for shade.

The Devii's Phone ual),
The Devil had a ‘phone call,
Not so very long ago,
And he said * talk lively ”',
I'm busy here below. .
A weak voice faintly answered,
* Have you a private room ?
Things up here are pressing —
I'll be coming down there soon."
‘It's the Kaiser now that s talking,
I'm in an awful fix ;
They say thers is an army coming,
From a place called Camp Dix.
I never was 80 frightened ;
1 have really got a spell,
They say those boys from Jersey
Are a whole lot worse than-—Well |
“ You are very much mistaken,
The Devil calmly said ;
You'll get no rest while living,
You'll get less when dead
I ve got no place to put you,
Devil though I am ;
You'll have to take what's coming,
When you tackle Uncle Sam.
1 ve got no time to listen,
