FAATE AGRICULTURAL NOTES,
It js estimated that 40 per cent, of
the wieat produced in Pennsyelvania
is shipped out of the counties where
grown,
‘Bmith gale
urday,
Pevuvsylvania farmers on March 1
held about 42 per cent, of the 1917 oats
crop.
Htatistics show that only 68 per
cent, of Lhe 1917 corn crop was of mers
chantable quality,
Heventy-one per cent, of the farm la
bor in Peunsylvenia ls hired with
board, 40 per cont. of which fs by the
month, 20 per cent, by the day and 11
per cent. extra harvest labor,
Government figures show that 719
tons of eabbsge were manufactored in
to esuer kraut by cauneries In the
Mtate lest year,
Ip 1910 there were 162,084 farm la-
borers in Pennsylvanis, but thers are
scarcely half that number avallsble
this year,
Potato Boab
A coramon diseases which causes
serious loss every year and which is
familiar toeveryone who handles pots-
toes Is Pota'o Beab, The heavy losees |
which growers suffer every year is the
reduction in yleld due to the Ir jiry to
the under ground portions and lower-
ing the quality of the production to
such an extent that many potatoes are
unmarketable,
This scab disease is a fungous para-
site and Is carried over winter in the
old scab spote or mixed with dirt
which olings to the smoot surface of
the potato. It lives in the soll from
year to year.
To pre vent potato scab seed potatoes
should be soaked for two hours in »
solution made by diluting one pint 40
per cent, formaldeyhde in thirty gal-
lons of water. They should then be
removed, spread out to dry, and are
then ready to be cut and planted,
Treated potatoes should not be return-
ed to infected sacks but should be pu’
in clean sacks or sacks that have been
soaked in the formaldebyde solution,
It is also useless to treat potatoes and
plant them in flelds where scab hae
appeared in previous years as the or-
ganism lives in the soll for some time,
Lime and ‘exceseive amounts of fresh
manure also favor geab development,
