Daniel A. Fisher, Pennsylvania
treckwalker, belween Montgomery
and Dewart, was instantly killed Tues-
day night of Iset week while on duty
on the Pennsylvania tracker, when he
was struck by a fast running freight
on the reverse movement, The acci-
dent happened near the Dewart sta-
tion.
Fisher was walking east on the
westbound track, the proper method
under ordinary rsilroadiog, but the
division officials were runniog traips
on the reverse movement, A (train

of the approaching train back of him,
Both trains were golog in the same di-

breaking his neck.
Mr, Fisher was not married and was
sixty-two years old, He has made his

Growthot ¥, 8, CU, 4, in Camp Meadr,
The development of Y. M. C. A.
work at Camp Meade within the last
five months is a splendid example of
efficient organizing, and the amount
of service the Aesociation bas been
able to rexder in that time Ia smeszing.
Of the ten green buildirgs now in full
operation, not one was completed
Baptember 1, and only three were un-
der copstruction. Two secretaries
constituted the crew then ; today the
etaff consists of seventy, And there
were times during the five months
when Mr, McKim, the camp general
secretary, was the oniy trained Y, M,
C. A. man on the force, Men of va-
rying professions and experiences were
sent to be Y. M, C., A, secretaries, and
the difficulty of the problem was io-
tensified, too, by the shortage of secr-
taries, which necessitated the use of
short-term wen. Bo one of Mr. Me-
Kim's big tasks was to mould these
many iodividusls into one bharmo-
nious and co-operative group, every
man related to a epecific task, and all
with the same goal in mind, But one
of the things which made this under
taking possible was the spendid atti-
tude of the men. * The work here, V’
gays McKim, * never could have come
to its present efficiency had it not been
for the eplendid spirit and unswerving
loyality of the secretaries who have
been continually forgetful of them-
selves in the supreme efturt to be of
service to the men.
For nearly three monthe now the
main suditorium, with a seating ca-
pacity of 5,000, has been in full opera-
tion and has been used extensively by
the government in its program of in-
struction, And as a place for recres-
tion in the form of athletics, stage en-
tertainments, and movies, it fs in op-
eration s.ven days of the week, as
well as for religions services on Bun-
days, The individual buglers are of-
ten used, upon request, by the govern-
ment for officers meeting, and every
association buildiog ie, of course, open
to the soldiers every day from reveille
to tape,
The program of the religious, social,
educational and physical departments
are continuous and almost unbelieva-
bly extensive. And it is significant to
note the interest in religious work last
montb, for example, when there were
more religious meetings than stage en~
tertainments plas movies, more atten-
daots st religious services than at
either movies or athletic events,
The incidental services, too, which
the aerociation performs are innumer-
able. To mention just one early in the
fall, when the csmp wee in a most
confused state, the Y, M, C. A. con-
structed a little information bureau st
the entrance to the railroad yarde, and
there took care of 12,000 personal ire
quiries,
And now the work of the asscoli-
tion ia to expand even more than cs)
culated at the outset, for three addi.
tional bungalowe, one to be located at
the remount station, one st the basse
hospital, and one at the cMoers’ ¢'ub

Will making is the great post mor-

occurrence by no means rare) it is cus-

World's Tallest Women.
After taking measurement of the
height of women in France, England
and America, a doctor announces that
the English woman is the tallest and
the American comes next. The aver-
age height of the Frenchwoman Is
five feet one inch. The American woin-
an is nearly two inches taller, and
the women of Great Britain one-half
inch taller than the latter. American
women are heavier, their average
weight being about 117 pounds,
