a
she Northern Conference,
The meeting of the Northern Con-
ference of the Central Pennsylvania
Synod convened in the church of the
Holy Cross, Georges Valley, Tuesday
evening, May 31st, and adjourned the
following Thursday evening. The en-
tire conference was inspiring and
helpful, The opening sermon was
preached by Rev. F. W., Barry, of
Bellefonte, the president of conference,
in which were set forth many good
and abiding things revealed through
the Bon. On Wednesday morning
Article 10 of the Augsburg Confession
was ably set forth by Rev. J. M,
Rearick, of Salona. Christanity en-
ters into one’s entire life, modifies the
pleasures, giving honorable principles
in business and pleading for honesty
in public and private life. The ser-
mon preceding the holy communion
was delivered by Rev. W, M. Rearick, of
Mifflinburg. The first subject in the
afternoon was treated by Rev. J. L
Btonecypher. He brought out with
much force and clearness that that
which binds people to a church is
Christ and all that he revealed of the
Godhead, Condemniog words were
spoken against those who used the
church for some belittling use, i. 6., as
to show their personal leadership, or
to win personal admiration, or be-
cause they personally loved the minis-
ter. It wasshown in the second sub-
ject that a church paper was a great
good both to the laity and to the
ministry. It educates the member in
the dire needs of his church. It gives
him a keener conception of spiritual
things and in this Way lightens the
work of the minister, as well as aids in
the benevolent work of the church.
+ The thought of the evening was
catechisation., In this method was
shown to exist the very highest power
of winning individuals for the Christ
and to enable them to live for him in
the years to come,
Tuursday was a day of special privi-
leges to all those who attended the ses.
sions of the conference ; every subject
was splendidly treated and was » feast
in itself. * The Church Member's
Relation to the Temperance Move.
ment '’ was set forth in an attractive
manner by Rev. C. R. Allenbach, the
secretary conference. It would
have besn well if many more could
have heard it. It was shown that the
old Keystone stale must be classed
with the wild and woolly states of the
west in its etand for the rum business,
and this is made possible by the up.
faithful church member. Are we de-
desirous of receiving God's condem-
nation 7 Let us smite the monster,
and receive his benediction.
The president set forth in clear
terms the great “ Laymen’s Mis.
sionary Movement which has
stirred the christian world to the very
ore with its plea to save the world in
this generation, and the sssursuce
that it can be done if you and you
will help. Rev. F. B, Bhuitz struck
some blows from the shoulder in treat.
ing the subject, * Bpiritual Methods
of Giving.” It was shown that gifts
iu the christian world to day are made
while consulting our own will and
thus stintingly we give. This is not
God’s bidding, and thus his bless
ing is withheld in this portion of
our service. Théclosiug sermon in the
evening was delivered to a large and
sppreciastive audience by Rev, J, M.
Rearick, who declared that service and
following Jesus are the highest types
in christian living.
