The Motor Rowen.
The suggestion made the other day
that the motorist, in the interest of
the public safety, should be deprived
of his horn, had something in it
the quality of paradox, but it is evi-

of the quality of truth. In =o:

Land that has been in clover md
followed with corn, is suitable, for
the reason that the thorough culth
vation requires by corn keeps down
the weeds and grass, It is not an
easy matter to kill weeds after the
wheat is up. If the land is plowed
in sammer, the weeds allowed to
start and a weeder, harrow, or cult
vator then used, as often as re
quired until the seed Is planted, the
land will be cleaned.
In drilling the seed, the practice
is to apply the fertilizer with the
seed, but the broadeast method is
also preferred by some, as fertilizer
is then more evenly distributed. If
stable manure is used it should be

Did the Chinese
Discover the Compass ?
By Cyrus C. Adams,
OME Asian pbople, perhaps the Chinese, discovered many cen
turies ago, that a kind of iron ore possessed a very peculiar
quality. We call this ore magnetic or, in more common lan
guage, lodestone, and it is very widely distributed, especially ip
the older crystalline rocks It was found that if a bit of lode
stone were placed in water upon a plece of cork or siraw braid
ft would turn tii the axis of the stone assumed a north and
south position. A phenomenon of magnetism had been discovered by means
of an ore that is peculiarly susceptible to magnetic influence
It ts an open question whether the Chinese utilized the directive power
of the lodestone, but it is certain that the first rude compass was not used ov
Puropean vessels before the twelfth century of our era. By that Hime the
true magnetic compass had been evolved through the discovery that if apn |
fron or steel needle were stroked on a lodestone, it would receive the attrac
tive and directive power of this ore. With this wonderfal appliance placed
at the service of navigation, the vessels that had hugged the coasts soon
dared to venture even out of sight of land. A new impetus was gradually
given to cartography. for now the true directions of the coast lines might be
charted with some approach to accuracy. It was the habpy fortune of Ital
fan sailors to make the excellent surveys the directions
and lengths of the Black Sea and Mediterranean coasts and along the Atlantio
to British waters that have come down to us In the socalled Portulan maps,
