{ THE JAPAN CURRENT. ————— Kuro Siwo Piles Great Loads ef Driftwood on Alaska's Shores, In one sense the Kuro 8iwo, or Japan current, is the most interesting in the world because many oceanographers believe it was the direct meails of peo- pling America, This mueh at least is certain: If a boat were to be set adrift on parts of the Aslatic coast and sur- vived all storms, the Japan current could be depended upon to carry it across the Pacitie and deposit it on the American shore. Such a thing has happened. In 1832 nine Japanese fish- ermen wore left derelict and unable to find their way back to shore. They went with the current, and after a drift lasting during several months they were carried to Hawali, Trees torn by storms from the banks of Asiatie rivers frequently float across the Pacific to the American coast. Be- tween KRakatag and Kyak islands, about 1,200 miles northwest of Seattle, enormous piles of this driftwood cover the beaches, There ean be no question of the Asiatic origin of the timber, They are the trunks of the camphor tree, the mango and the mahogany. | Logs 150 feet long and eight feet in di- | ameter are frequently found, Many of them ‘are seen floating shoreward, with fantastie roots standing high above the waves, In places the logs ave piled twenty feet high, They are generally without bark, which Las been peeled | off by the waves, and most of them | have become white and heavy from impregnation with salt water, As they pile up the sands drift over them, and gradually they sink out of sight, and new beac formed, This procesa has beet going on for ages, and the shore ine is being steadily extended. Excavations alang the beach show that texture of the buried timber gets hard- er and harder the farther in you go, until in some Instances petrifaction has taken place. Other excavations show jogs that have turned to coal, Lies are The pre senge of Siberian driftwood on the shores of Greenland convinced | Nansen that hi 8 idea of drifting ac the Polar sca in the Fram was Great quanti the wood are an- of Spitz nually consts bergen and there FOSS logical. ties of the Zem on Nova cast and bia, deg wend for sl runners and rood n implements on the drift from | Siberian forests, For years they pended for fron In en hoops of ¢ which to over seas,— dore Waters In lee’s ipleinents came The The Willing Worker. asked a modest “that when | stay nirs to voluntarily 10h Why breadwinney, office after he amount of work re pounces victim and 0 do? young at the fs f# iN AL, S011 is in Justif filable more “That has Lappened time in my basiness, and tition I have taken a vow tha ever in charge of » 1 si any oue of my nte down and does work which foally required of him credit for wi he nd let it go at that, with out adding Insult to injury, as It were, | by giving Lim something further to d “Of course old saying that the | man be most work is the man usually ‘worked; but it's discs asing, do y enough, though, Le goes ahead and fet | himself be ‘worked, with only a weak | objection to ease his feelings. Reasons Why Food Should Not Be Tumbled Rapidly Into the Little Stomanch—Advice Which Applies to Grown Folks as Well as Babes. In the proper bringing up of a child there is nothing absolutely more portant than this one thing--to teach II to cat slowly. Every groom knows and observes the rule in the care of a horse that rapid eating is fatal to digestion. There are nil sorts of patent mangers to prevent the horse swallowing his oats too quickly. The man who has no patent manger knows enough, when neces sary, to put a stone in the manger, scattering the oats around it, so that horse may be compelled to eat If "the horse's inclination is to gulp down water too fast, the care- ful man will put a big sponge in the water, compelling slow drinking. A child's appetite, when he is al- is always In ex- of his actual needs unless the child is in bad health. The reason for this is extremely simple. The child craves food because his body requires manufacture new tissue, Ie is and be must not only replace the used up tissues that his daily life but he must make new flesh, sw muscles, new bone and new blood every day, adding weight and size. The brain has frst eal upon the gervige sf the heat, and as soon p§ the bean Is excited the blood leaves the stomach snd goes to the head, The muscles also too violently ex. erted draw the blood awny from the stomach. It is absolutely impossible for a child OF 4 grown pegswn io digest properly or to get strength and vitality from what he eats unless for at least a half hour after eating the stomach be al lowed to monopolize the blood supply.
