O! DON'T!! Don’t let it enter the minds of Dem- ocrals to fuse with Republicans on the county ticket, Don’t! O! Don't!! The Democratic party of Centre county can sufler defeat and rise to supremacy. Defeat through fusion means a complete sacrifice of the Dem- ocratie party. If fusion is successful, what is gained ? There is no reason to fear the defeat in Centre county of an absolutely straight Democeratic ticket, Don’t fuse! etl to tome Fizz 2-2 is all there is in fusion. — ht The report of the legisiative com, mittee of the Pennsylvania State Grange on taxation calls attenticn to the monstrous inequslities in the dis tribution of the heavy burdens of government are revealed in that re port and it is no wonder that farmers protest. It is shown that they are compelled to pay four or five times as much in taxation as other interests and the life of the agricultural element is being crushed by this unequal bur- den. The Grapge is deing a great and useful work in bringing the tax ques tion to the front. Perhaps its plans of relief are not the best possible, but its complaint is just and its proposals demand fair consideration. This country cannot goon half taxed and half free. Justice demands relief for labor and privilege must go. ifsc nf e——— Efforts’ have been made, so it is re ported from Washington, to have Pre- gident Roosevelt use his influence to re- duce Southern representation in Con- gress, but the President has declined to interfere, and the proposed measures have no chance, as matters stand, to become laws. There will be a great deal of talk, and possibly an investi- gation of Southern suffrage plans, but there it will end. The far-sighted men of the R lican party, accepted as leaders, privately hold that the peo- ple of the Bouth are entitled to a chance to take up this problem of the ¢lored vote aud solve it in their own way. That is precisely what the peo- ple of the North would maintain were they confronted by the dangers of negro suffrage as thicy are presented at the South. sss A A op epub The partial failure of the corn crop in the great corn States of the West is reflected in our foreign commerce. In October of this vear corn exports amounted to only 3,800,000 bushels. In October of last year shipments ag- gregated 13,500,000 bushels. Ship- ments from Atlantic ports last week only 278 000 bushels, against 6 300,000 bushels for the corresponding period in 1900. It is evident that Europe does not care to take much corn at present prices, It is to be considered there is a vast amount of corn in the hands of producers who are holding it for higher prices, ini ef ——————— A New Venture for Woman. The part thut women took in the re- cent land lottery, in Oklabama, when 13,000 farms of 160 sere a each were dis tributed by lot, is the sulject of an in- teresting comment io the January De- lineator. Many women were success ful in this competition, and there is no doubt of their success in the devel opment of their new opportunities, EC ——— EY Keith's Theatre, Keith's week-before-Christmas bill is calculated to draw the usual capaci- ty-of-the house audiences, The Coli- bris Midgets, three ma'es snd (wo fe- m:les, appeared for the first time in Philadelphia Monday. Of that he is unanimously acquitted. “His conduct during the battle of July 3 was self. sed, and he encortraged, in his person, his subordinate officers and men to fight conrageously,” eays the majority report of the Conrt of Inquiry. “Commodore Schley was the senior officer of our squadron off Santiago when the Spanish equadron attempted to escape on the morning of July 3, 1808, He was in absolute command, and is entitled to the credit due to snch a commanding officer for the glorious victory which resulted in the total “destruction of the Spanish ships,” says Dewey in the minority report, Thus the main point is settled, and in Dewey's opinion the see. ond contention, that Schley was in command and was entitled to the victory, should be decided in Scliley’s favor. Admirals Benbam and Ramsay have plainly done what they conld to save the naval clique from com humiliation and have perpetrated another outrage against a hero. Itis not the first time that narrow professional prejudice has ruled men. Dewey stood above the envious erowd of conspirators, determin ed and unafraid, and in the presence of his fairness Benham and Ram. #ay did not dare to venture far. But they went too far.
