When former Governor Daniel Has-
tings gets the regular Republicans
licked, he'll be ready for another Cone-
maugh catastrophe,
Bp i,
The Bellefonte correspondent to the
Philadelphia Inquirer has given to the
people of the state another famous
Centre county story. He says: Mrs.
C. P. Russel, of Boggs township, Cen-
tre county, is dangerously ill with
nervous prostration, the result of a ter-
rific encounter with a large black
snake. The screams of a little four
year-old granddaughter, who had been
left playing with her baby brother in
the kitchen brought Mrs. Russel and
her aged husband to the scene and
there they beheld a large black snake
coiled up on a rug beside the children,
When the reptile stuck out its tongue
the baby, in its playful manner, would
catch it. Mr. Russel, a feeble old man,
had a terrible battle for his life, The
snake raced him round and round the
room. Fortunately the snake was
driven into the sitting room, where it
was killed by some of the other mem-
bers of the family. The writer of these
and other ridiculous stories about Cen-
tre county people and their doings
which have appeared in the dailies, evi-
dently regards the people throughout
the state as of Inferior intellectual
ability, and such only could they be if
they would believe all the wonderful
fairy tales which have been sent out.

M. IL Gardner, the present prothon-
otary and Democratic candidate for re
election was in Centre Hall Friday.
Mr. Gardner is finishing up his first
term in a most creditable manner, and
as the custom is to re-elect prothono-
taries a second time, Mr. Gardner
may depend upon the Democrats on
the south side to do their duty. He
has been a faithful officer, and one of
the most obliging and courteous office
holders in the court house ;: he is the
