Thomas Wentworth Higginson of Boston, Mass, who supported Me- very independent politically. Higginson was a brave soldier of the rebellion, a leading and influential cit- izen of his native state, and was a| member of that famous literary coterie | composed of Emerson, Longfellow, Lowell, Oliver Wendall Holmes, and other worthies who shed imperishable | lustre on Boston and the entire bu-| of such character and espouses, bs What did Hastings when governor do for you, Democrats, that you should aid him in electing his men, Messrs Allison anl Thompson to the legisla- | ture? If you would have asked an ap- pointment, clerkship, or any substan- | tial favor, he would have told you, *‘those snaps are for Republicans.” Why then should any Democrat aid in furthering Hasting's interests by supporting his legislative candidates? cin sc fA ——— NEW YORK, The Democrats of New nominated Hon. John B., Stanchfield, the former law partner of ex-Senator David B. Hill for Governor, with the balance of the ticket selected so as to make the ticket a strong one, and one which will strongly unite all the ele ments opposed to Platt and the Repub- lican state administration. That it is & ticket acceptable to the independents is evidenced by the support it is receiv- ing from that source. The New York Times, an independent Republican pa- per, and which supports McKinley, comes out for Btanchfield and the Democratic state ticket in an editorial from which we quote the following: “We see no reason why Mr. Staoch- field should not poll the entire Demo- eratic vote of the state of New York. We do not see why he should not poll the entire independent anti-boss vole. The party vote, and the independent vote would elect him, and the Times believes he ought to be elected.” York have I — A—— > Democrats, don’t let yourselves be fooled into promising to vote for Mr, Allison because ‘“‘he's such a nice man.” That's all right, but how can you expect to keep up a Democratic or- ganization by voting for Republicans simply ‘because they're so nice.” Ianc—— A A ————— JONES FOR BRYAN, Mayor 8. W. Jones, of Toledo, Ohio, a former Republican, who ran as an in- dependent candidate for Governor of Ohio last year and succeeded in polling more than 100,000 votes, has written a long letter giving his reasons for sup- porting Mr, Bryan in this campaign, Mayor Jones has a large following in northern Ohio, the stronghold of Re- publicanism in that state, and the home of Hanna and McKinley, and his conversion to Bryan and Sjeven- son has encouraged the Democrats to such an extent that they feel confident of carrying Ohio for Bryan, and the Republicans admit that the state has become fairly doubtful, J. W. KEPLER, W. J. Kepler, of Ferguson township, Democratic candidate for assembly, spent a few days at the Granger's great pienic and exhibition last week. Mr. Kepler is worthy the support of every Democrat in the county.
