This remarkable state of affairs is due to the fact that the li- censes, granted, according to a rule of the court, in March for one year, or 365 fell on the 15th, and this year the third Monday comes on the 2ist. Judge the saloon keepers felt obliged to close their places. The situation has caus- ed intense indignation throughout the county. —— Decrease in Anthracite Coal, Statistics show that in this state dur- ing 1897, as compared with 1806, there wae a decrease in the production of an- thracite coal of over a million tons, while the output of the bituminous coal increased nearly four and one- half millions of tons, and the output of coke nearly two millions of tons.
