The riot in the Austrian parliament
went on with more disgraceful vie,
lence the second day, Saturday. Dr.
Wolff, the German Nationalist leader,
defied all authority to repress him and
was, after on desperate struggle, bound
and gagged. Then he was bundled
futo un cab and taken to a police sta.
tion. Mark Twain, who had been
viewing the extraordinary scenes, was
violently ejected from the House, and
during his exit was struck a severe
blow by a Czech Deputy. Attacks
were also made on the President of the
House.
In the evening the police were com-
pelled repeatedly to disperse excited
political crowds which gathered in the

In a Bad Fix,
The Republican party has managed
in the first eight months in which it
has had control of the Government to
put itself in a very unfortunate posi-
tion. Its tariff act “to provide reve
| nue for the Government’ does not pro-
vide as much revenue as the act which
it supplanted. The borrowed money
accumulated in the Treasury by the
Cleveland Administration in excess of
the gold reserve is fast disappearing.
There is serious trouble ahead, and the
party will soon have to choose one of
three ways to meet it: The Adminis
tration can borrow more money to
make good the deficit; or it can frank-
ly admit the mistake made in the pas-
sage of the Dingley bill and try to
amend it so as to get the necessary rev-
enue from customs or internal taxes:
or it ean take the heroic method of
cutting down appropriations to the
measure of the Federal income.
