IN another colum we give a strong
criticism of the Supreme Court by the |
minority Judges of that tribunal who
are not Democrats. This knocks the |
criticism of Bryan's platform into tat-
ters because of its criticisismof the Su-
preme Court. That tribunal is only a
public servant and as open to criticism
as the President or any other public
official. At the time of the Dred Scott
decision, based upon a clear constitu-
tional point, the entire Republican
party not only harshly criticised but
indecently abused the Bupreme Court.
It makes s difference whose ox is
gored,
Suprrose that Mr, Bryan should de-
clare that National Banks were more
dangerous to our liberties than stand-
ing armies, he would be denounced as
an anarchist by the Hannaized press,
yet he would only be repeating the
words of Thomas Jefferson.
Suppose that be should also declare
that gold was the most useless metal
in the world, fit only for plugging
teeth and ornamenting fools, that press
would denounce bim as a lunatic, yet
he would only be repeating the words | co
of Berffamin Franklin,
Suppose he should declare that any- |
thing upon which the government | |
placed its stamp and declared a legal |
tender for debts and taxes was money,
he would be called a fool, yet he would |
be repeating the words of Henry Clay,
Suppose he should declare that the |
further maintenance of the gold stand- |
ard would ruin the country, he would |
only be repeating the words of James |
Gi. Blaine,
Suppose that on the stump he should |
lift his hand toward Heaven and
swear, by the eternal we shall see who |
will rule, the money power or the peo-
ple, he would only be imitating An-
drew Jackson.

| JOHN HAMILTON, Farmer, Ete,
One of the useless new offices crea-
ted by the last legislature, was that of
{ Deputy Secretary of Agriculture with
i & salary of $3000 per year! This place
[ was given to our esteemed ‘farmer’
fellow citizen, John Hamilton, who
now holds, and always has held, the
salaried state position of Treasurer of
State College. That the office of De-
puty Becretary of Agriculture is a use-
less one, a mere sinecure, is evidenced
that the Deputy Secretary has little or
nothing to do since he is traveling
around making speeches for gold and
McKinley, to which the masses of the
people, especially the farmers, are op-
posed because ruinous to their inter-
ests, and solely in the interest of the
trusts and money sharks, who for
years have preyed upon the farmers
and working men. The Deputy is out
of place in stumping for goldbugs, or
he is out of place as Deputy of the Ag-
ricultural Donartmant, There scem

Tue Gazette experiences great ago-
ny in endeavoring to enlighten its
for the Pensioning Judges. It exon- |
erates him upon the grounds that he |
knew it would not become a law; that |
tions for State College and the
ipsburg hospital would have
withheld. Bosh. Any man who
been
and then in the face of it gives it his
endorsement should never be allowed
ta go back again, We want men there
who are not of fickle mind. Represen-
tatives are éx pected to care for the in-
section, yet Cartin deliberately voted
to place upon the retired list the Judg-
es of the state, and pay them a nice an-
nuity besides. How has he looked af-
ter the interests of the hard-working
farmer who toils fifteen to eighteen
hours a day ? Look at his record. He
voted with the Standard Oil Compa-
ny, the increase of salaries and for the
creation of all useless and expensive
offices. The farmers want a man who
will vote to cut down taxation and not
10 increase it as Curtin has done.
