On Monday last five ex-county com-
missioners happened to be in our town
without any previous understanding,

five X's, to their honor and credit be it

A resolution was passed at the last
meeting of Bellefonte council, instruct-
ing the burgess to enforce the Sunday
closing law, and see that merchants,
who have been doing business on that

Elder William Howe, one of the
most prominent ministers of the Dun-
kard brethren in Central Pennsylva-
nia, died at his bome in Maitland,
Mifflin county, aged over 70 years.

Killed by a Tree
The Journal says a fatal accident be-
fell Edward Treaster, on New Year's
morning. He and another man star-
ted out early to eut props on Duncan's
lumber job. The first tree they cut
lodged. In working to get it down it
suddenly gave way and fell on Trens-
ter. His skull was fractured and he
died from the injury on the following

A leading business man of Tyrone,
W. B. Stewart, left his place of busi-

An Ancient Shooting Iron.
{ Andrew Harter, of Coburn, has a
| flint-lock rifle which has an interesting
history. It is 116 years old, was the
property of Melcher Schreckengast of
Sugar valley, and with it were killed
167 deer, 76 bears and one panther. It
is remarkably well preserved consider-
ing its age.

On Saturday evening a locomotive
from a freight train at |
| Snow Shoe Intersection, on the Bald |
| Eagle BR. R., and started down the
track under full head of steam towards
Lock Haven, without engineer or fire
man aboard, The track was cleared,
and efforts were made to ditch the fly-
ing engine by piling ties on the track,
but it swept the obstructions aside and
kept on course until near Mt. Ya-
gle, wher: 1+ was captured. No ove
was hurt.
