FOR CONGRESS,
We are authorized to announce the name of |
Aaron Willtams, of Bellefonte, as a candidate for
the nomination for congress of this district, sub-
jou to the rules and regulations of the Democrat
¢ party.
A DISGRACEFUL NOMINATION.
The Republicans of Crawford coun-
ty have again nominated Representa-
tive Andrews for the State Senate.
He was the nominated candidate of
the party four years ago for the same
office when he was Chairman of the
Republican State committee, but his
county, with fully two thousand Re-
publican majority, defeated him by
over a thousand. Two years ago he
forced himself upon the Republican
ticket as a candidate for Representa-
tive and was again defeated, but oust-
ed his successful competitor and crawl-
ed into his seat on a naked technicali-
ty. It was not pretended that he had
not been honestly defeated by the peo-
ple, but a legal technicality was sum-
moned to disfranchise a number of dis-
triets in his county, and he was thus
given the place which the people had
refused to award him. In the face of
these two defeats he has again accom-
plished his own nomination for the
State Senate, and unless self-respect
has ceased to be cherished by the peo-
ple of that county he will be defeated
again.
It is doubtless believed by Mr. An-
drews and his friends that this will be
a great Republican year, and that any-
body may be elected on that side
where there is a party majority regard-
less of the respect he commands from
the people. But while the Republi-
cans seem reasonably certain to win
doubtful and possibly even adverse
districts next fall where they present
good candidates, it is not at all certain
that objectionable candidates can be
elected even in the Republican districts.
The people of Pennsylvania repudi-
ated Andrews and his methods four
years ago, not only by defeating him
for the Senate, but by defeating his
special candidate for Governor, Mr.

before it as finished
committee and the bill is to pass early
in June, perhaps sooner.
The house duties are restored ;
of the changes are unimportant ;
duty on rice is restored ;
changed from ad valorem to specific ; |
numerous changes are made in the |
woolen and cotton schedules ; whisky |
is left untouched but a fight is proba- |
ble.
All the Democratic senators have
been brought to unite upon this bill |
except senator Hill, who opposes it
upon the income tax feature.
Democrats can pass the bill without
Hill's vote.

THE Republicans having carried our
county last fall by some 500 majority,
makes them fecl hopeful of carrying it
again the coming fall. Well, we will
see about that, later on, If the Demo-
crate put a strong local ticket in the
field, the opposition may as well hang
their harp upon the willows, The af.
fairs of our county have been so well
managed by Democratic county com-
missioners that the people have no rea-
son whatever to complain, The other
Democratic county officials have pro-
ven obliging as well as competent and
there is no dissatisfaction on their ace
count. Now why should not our par.
