CENTRE HALL, PA., THURS. APRIL 5
ANARCHY IN SOUTH CAROLINA,
The tension in South Carolina has
resulted in the inevitable bursting as-
under of the srtands and the legitimate
end of the TrLLMAN experiment in
State socialism is at hand. It fur-
nishes an object lession whose value it
would seem almost impossible to mis-
take. The unfortunate State which is
sufferinglunder this first logical and
uncompromising affliction of Populist
theories has gained not the millennium
but murder, riot and civie revolt, and
as both Governor and the citizens
whom his system of espionage has
driven to desperation seem determined
to force the crisis, the fall of Populism
in South Carolina may be attended by
still further scenes of violence
bloodshed.
For what has already happened no |
and |
one on earth is to blame except Till- |
man and his Populist supporters. He |
still asserts himself to be acting as a
guardian of the new law. The fact is |
that his law and the methods he has |
aken to enforce it are an open, defiant |
infringment of the Constitution and of |
principles based on the Bill Sof]
Rights and Magna Charta itself. “The
people shall be secure in their persons,
houses, paper and possessions from |
unreasonable searches and seizures.”
The facts that a Legislature permits or |
prescribes unreasonable sewrches does
not render them any the less obnox-
ious, and in standing out for the in-!
violabiity of their homes the South
Carolinians are on precisely the ground |
that all the farmers of these our An-
glo-Saxon institutions have taken for |
their support since they first determin-
ed that they would not put up with |
either tyranny or monkey business.
And every attempt, in whatever |
quarter, to interfere will private rights
will always arouse resistance—and |
when the interference becomes inhu-
man and intolerable people will get
down their guns
When the first spark of trouble show-
ed at Darlington some weeks ago at-
tention was call to Tillman's threats,
and it was pointed out that this sort of |
socialismn was much the same as an- |
archy. The remark has been more |
than justified. We have the spectacle
of sworn officers of the State conduct- |
ing themselves and being hunted down
like hired bravoes; we have the Gov- |
erent calling out the militia, which
disbands rather than obey him; we
have him attempting to seize the rail- |
|
i
to him a callous front, and we have |
both sides arming for a struggle. |
Where is the government of South |
Carolina at this juncture? Certainly, |
when Populism is reduced to the
military,” it should be able to make |
good its words. It should at least es-|
tablish itself as an armed despotism,
for otherwise it will Jand in chaos,
where Tillman finds himself.—Philad.
