DOCTOR LEMON AGAIN, More Suggestions as to the Value of Lem- ons, I was informed the other day that lemons would keep an indefinite length of time if placed in sour milk or water. This is a receipt, however, that I shall not try, since the time of year has ar- rived when I do not care to keep my lemons, Indeed, the faster I can use them the better for my family. We need their healthful acid to counteract the excess of fats which have, for calo- rie, been consumed-—more, doubtless, than have been assimilated. Why now goad the weary, long tried liver with blue pills when lemons are sup- plied in lavish profusion ? Surely they are the products of the soil where dwell the most bilious people. Pater families are suffering from biliousness, therefore I throw physic (blue pills) to the dogs—and they, wise creatures, will not touch it—giving in its stead lemon tea or hot lemonade. The excess of bile is thus summarily destroyed, and perchance a fever rout- ed. Malaria threatens another mem- ber of the family. I forthwith pre- pare the “Toman’’ cure which is noth- ing more than lemons, rind and pulp, cut in water—a pint of water to a lem- on—and boiled down to one pint; dose one teaspoonful before a meal. Though sufficiently sour to give a marble bust a wry face, pharmacists claim it has cured cases so stubborn that quinine had no more effect than sugar or salt, Perhaps the little two-year-old shows symptoms of a severe cold. 1 shall “nip it in the bud” by fire warmth and hot lemonade. Ifshe is hoarse I shall bake a lemon some twenty min- utes and squeeze therefrom the hot juice upon a half cup of granulated su- gar. The pleasant and palatable syr- up thus formed will avert the most-to- be-dreaded croup. Nothing better can I find to impede threatened pneumo- nia attack upon myself. The rem- nants of some of the lemons I shall give Biddy to rub her hands with after the weekly washing, thereby prevent- ing the chapping whieh she so much dreads. Clean rind pieces left from cooking I shall place in a glass jar, covering with alcohol, thereby manu- facturing a superior quality of lemon essence. As a breakfast appetizer 1 shall remove the rind and pith from three lemons then slice thin and stew with powdered sugar. Surely Ishould be “pennywise and pound foolish” to save at the present time, my lemons. nl La Grippe Again. The re-appearance of the “GRIP” calls to mind the experience of Jas. O. Jones, publisher of the Leader, Mex- ia, Texas. He was sick in bed for ten days with the grip during its preva- lence a year or two ago. Later in the season he had a second attack. He says: ‘In the latter case [I used Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and with considerable success, I think, on- ly being in bed a little over two days. The second attack, I am satisfied, would have been equally as bad as the first, but for the use of this remedy.” It should be borne in mind that the grip is much the same as a very severe cold and requires precisely the same treatment. When you wish to cure a cold quickly and effectually give this remedy a trial. 25 and 50 cent bottles for sale by J. D. Murray. e——————— - An Important License Money Case, A Lock Haven special of January 4, says: Judge Mayer has rendered an opinion concerning liquor license fees whieh is of interest all over the state. The city treasurer of Lock Haven said that all the liquor license fees were paid to the county treasurer, who got a large commission for handling the money, and he asked the court to stop the practice. The Judge decided that only the liquor license money that be- longs to the county shall be paid tothe county Treasurer, and what belongs to the city shall be paid directly to the City Treasurer. This opinion deprives the County Treasurer of a snug source of revenue, and transfers it to the City Treasurer, a ————— A SS —————————— “During the epidemic of la grippe Chamberlain's Cough Remedy took the lead here and was much better liked than other cough medicines.” H.
