DR. SCHAFF DEAD. A Leader Among Theologians Enters Into | Final Rest, Rev. Dr. Philip Schaff, on exegesis and chureh history, died Friday morning at his home in New York. Paralysis was the cause of his death. Dr. Schaff' took amination for a professorship, in Ber- lin, 1841, after which he through Europe as tutor to the son of a Prussinn nobleman. Upon turn to Berlin he lectured in versity of that city. In 1844 removed to America, ac- ical seminary of the German ed church of the United States, Mercersburg, Pa. He held this tion from 1844 to 1863, ed to New York. His lectures church history, delivered in theologic- al seminaries at Andover, Hartford and New York, gave him great promi- nence, and in 1870 he was made pro- fessor of sacred literature at Union Theological seminary, New York. Two More Prisoners Take French From The Jail. evening two more prisoners made their escape from the county jail, at Bellefonte, making their exit from the same hole Freeman and Johnston escaped through just one week previous. The hole in the wall had been filled up and it was no matter for the prisoners to remove the stone from the fresh morter and get into the jail yard. For sculing the wall ropes were used, which had been procured in some manner. One of the prisoners was Samuel Meese, who was serving a nine months sentence for as- sault and battery.
