em" COUNCIL MAKES A MISTAKE, That Infallible Body Seems to Have a Mis. oarriage. The town council of Bellefonte a few weeks ago erected an orchestra stand in the centre of the square, and now finds itself obliged to remove the stand within ten days, upon an opin- ion given by attorney Clement Dale, the stand being out of place, any acci- dent happening by frightening a team or by a collision with the stand, the boro would become involved in a law suit and in danger of having damages to pay. A sensibleand timely opinion. Centre Hall may as well take the hint, dangerous gutters are now being constructed out of place, close to the driveway on each side of it, by direc- tion of the council, no telling when an upset of a rig may be eaused. Who ever knew of gutters being placed out on the drive-way of road or street run- ning parallel with it? No town has its gutters otherwise than at the edge of the walk, whieh is custom and com- mon sense as there is no danger there. Are our citizens willing to run the risk? Opposite D, Fleishers a boorish, out- landish bridge, such as you see on a mountain road, is being put down, with an offset of about 3 feet on each side of it as a trap for accidents and where no bridge is called for. One of the councilmen tells us he has no re- sponsibility in this job and intimated that it was the conception of Mingle and Van Pelt. A citizen who surveyed the matter closely gives it as his idea that one purpose of the job scemed to be to drain the water from a council man’s lot and cause it to flow in the direction of the Evangelical lot and Fleisher lots, illegally and unjustly draining the pockets of the taxpayers to the tune of $400 to $500 when outlandish job is done. A model fair with of the should be sent to the World's the names of the originators job. itself into the council so recently we think you have the answer—it ism in board walks, men at expense of taxpayers. The entire job is a disgraceful nui- sance and illegal and refuse to pay the tax, We are sorry pleasant duty we owe the public. For the credit of the town the PORTER respectfully asks the cou to remove its bridge. 8 ee The Grasshopper. Lukes Evangelical Lutheran church, Centre Hall, passed on the 18th day of July, to her reward on high. Through its officers the above nam- ed society would express its sense of loss in the following resolutions: Resolved, That whilst we bow be- fore the will of Him without whose will not a sparrow falls to the ground, we yet keenly feel the death of our sister and co-worker. Resolved, That in her death we see emphasized the seripture that saith, “Boast not of to-morrow, for thou knowest not what a day nor an hour may bring forth.” Resolved, That we will best express our appreciation of our sisters’ person- al worth and work, by more earnestly devoting ourselves to the cause of the society of which she was for so many years a member, Resolved, That these resolutions be placed on record by our secretary and a copy sent to the Centre Hall REPOR- TER for publication.
