HOW DIGNITARIES WERE vania System, {Chicago Herald, October 22d, 1892 ) One of the most important and sue- ceasful features in connection with the dedicatory exercises of the World's Fair grounds, and one which fully illustrates the wonderful ment made by the Pennsylvania Rail- road Company of the cabinet officers, the supreme court justices, and diplomatic corps from Washington to this city and back. It required three special trains to perform this function, and Vice-President Frank Thomson, to whom the credit of the achievement is | due, made requisition on the Pullman Palace Car Company for the finest equipment which those famous car! builders could produce. The was a triple section train such never before glided over the rails in any country. A crew of twenty-five persons, including wok waiters, porters, maids, eleclricians, and in addition to usual quota of trainmen, was required | to insure proper service. The outfit resembled in a somewhat lessened de- gree the personal equipment of ocean greyhound, of which the trains were a duplication on land. These trains and tendered for the use of the distinguish- ed guests of Chicago by Vice-President Thomson. They were run from Wash- ington to Chicago as sections of tl regular ‘Chicago Limited,” of which they were duplicates, and they formed to the regular schedule of that train. With the thorough organiza- tion of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and its splendid system they came through the entire distance, on the special schedule time arranged for them, without any kind, and this in the face of an extraordinarily traffic. cellent condition, protected by the safeguards of modern the result has as ~ stewards, machinists, the an were provided © COll- accident or delay of increased passenger The great line is in such ex- physicial well SO invention, and so perfectly managed by a of men educated and trained under t its high officials, that a this kind, extraordinary as it may corps who have ed he « yes of movement of i pear to the public, was effected with- out interfering in any the routine of everyday traffic It is safe to say that wi country in the world would | move manner with Hie Ho nization the entire orga f +} . of one thous government a distance miles, so there is no other railroad company which could grapple with such a problem and solve it with the | care to the persons in interest and the credit to itself that has this achievement of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It reflects the utmost ere Vice-President Thomsor planned, and his associates ecuted the brilliant fe transportation, and holds out a bright distinguished dit on at of promise of equally successful work when the resources of this line drawn upon next year to furnish adequate transportation facilities to the hosts who will visit the greatest fair.
