A Poor House Waifl"s Sad Death.
Canrasre, Pa., Nov, 18.—Quite a sen
sation has been produced by the death
of the lad alleged to have been beaten
death by John Lafferty at ldaville
Adams county, just across the Cumber-
land county line. A trial for murder
will probably be the result. The body
of the boy showed a number of bruises,
and there is little doubt that death was
caused by a cruel beating at the hands
of the farmer. The boy is the son of a
poor woman of this place, and was taken
from the almshouse by Lafferty.
Bentley's Bonanza Blocked.
Nogristows, Pa., Nov. 14. Thomas
Bentley, colored, who has been going
about collecting money for two rom
churches—one at Jenkintown, the other
at Hatboro—has been committed to an-
swer for alleged false representations,
Bentley, it is alleged, was not anthorized
to collect funds. He carried two sub
scription books, one for each church,
and, it is said, appropriated to his own
use the money he tea

PrinaveLriisa, Nov, 16. — Frederick
Turner, secretary and treasurer of the
Knights of Labor prior to the Indian-
apolis convention of 1888, fires a broad-
side at General Master Workman Pow-
derly in defense of the charges made
at the present Detroit convention
that he was short in his accounts,
Some of the canceled checks which Mr.
Turner exhibits are the basis of a re-
markable tale concerning Mr. Pow-

“private” and “confidential” instructions
as to little arrangements of his own.
PrivaveLrmia, Nov. 16. A diphtheria
epidbmic is feared among the medical
profession, owing to the prevalence of
the disease in all parts of the city, In
some portions it is even now almost epi-
demic, and spreading rapidly. The dis-
easo is most noticeable and in ite worst
form in the northeastern part of the city.
It is also alarmingly bad I the recently
built up northwestern districts, where,
owing to the altitude and freedom from
all contaminating influences, the sani-
tary conditions are generally conceded
to be of the best, During October there
was a marked increase both in the spread
of the disease and the death rate, Which
