L CITY OF THE DEAD Further Details of the Railroad Horror in Switzerland. LARGELY INCREASED DEATH LIST The Total Number of Lives Lost Now Placed at 120-Several Fam. ilies Practically Wiped Out of Ex. istence—Sad Scenes on the River Bank. Berxg, June 16. —Further details re- ceived from the scene of the terrible railroad accident which occurred at a village near Bale, on the Menchenstein and Bale railroad, show that two en- wines and three carriages loaded with excursionists fell into the stream which flowed beneath the iron bridge, which gave way and caused the disaster, These carriages and engines now form a shapeless heap of wreckage beneath prevented two other carriages, which were suspended practically in the air, the number of killed and wounded. Over a Handred Dead, is now placed at 120, with hundreds more or less injured. Of the large number of persons injured, many have suffered so seriously that it is con- sidered likely that their injuries will terminate fatally, as they consist of bad lacerations, and in some cases limbs have been completely severed. Engineers who have inspected the bridge since its collapse say that the iron work of the structure alone gave way, and that the masonry work is in tact. The musical fete at Manchen- stein, to which the excursionists were bound, was abandoned as soon as the news of the accident was received, and hundreds of villagers hurried to the scene to assist in rescuing the victims. The bridge was an iron skeleton struc. ture, which was considered weil built sud substantial. The only apparent rea- gam for the collapse of the bridge is that the train left the : dls and threw ifs en- tire weight on one side 7 the bridge. A City of the Dead. Scenes which were truly heartrender- were witnessed in this city when the bodies of a large number of the vic tims were brought here. Several fami- lies were practically wiped entirely out of existence by the disaster, the fall ex- tent of whichis not known yet. Bale is now truly a city of mourning, a place of the dead. and the scene of bitter desola- tion and mourning. Nearly every family in the city may be said to have been touched By the « alamity. The work of the soldiers dragging the river was greatly impeded by the fact that the stréam is considerably swollen. Thus the waters carried many of the b dies a long way down the river, so nuch so that it is expected that sever: ul day s of such dredging work will be re- eyired before the soldiers’ work will be LOM ete nl. G lastly as the broken bridge and its environs were during the work just de scribed there was one corner of the dark picture which was the center of the dusk This spot was the impro “deed morgue on the river bank. w x aken and t tenderl their lives ' het © t ie 4 Were 3 Le BOR ce of the dead were : trees, and a bivoaac of 1alantry soldiers, wio furnished a guard number, ne, with fixed wvonets, formed SOUATE OF { i3 ar ind the d i s# v2ai] Ci tYE mitting within their lines or * wl op Gk rid Who wer RTC Of Teliaiive “Fritz Eonar Dead, Y..
