Lang Found Oriminally Responsis ble—Feeling Against the Verdict, Duxsag, Pa., July 12.—The coroner's ' jury in the case of the Hill Farm disas- ter rendered the following verdict: “Daniel Shearin came to his death while in the discharge of his duties as fire boss in the Hill Farm mine, on the 16th day of June 1890, by being suffoca- ted with after damp, a smoke caused by an explogion of gas, by John Kerwin opening a drill hole in an unlawful man- ner, under directions and by order of Robert Lang, superintendent, and that said Robert Lang is criminally responsi- ble in causing the death of said Daniel Shearin. “David Hay came to his death while in the discharge of duty, in trving to rescue his son in the Hill Farm mine on the 16th of June, 1890, by being suffocated with afterdamp and smoke caused by an explosion of gas by John Kerwin opening a drill hole in an unlawful manner, under direction and by order of Robert Lang, superintendent, and that we believe said Robert Lang is criminally responsible in cansing the death of said Robert Hay.” The public feeling is against the ver- dict. The laboring people say the blame should not be laid on Mr. Lang, who has always been faithful in his duty in looking after the safety and wel- fare of his employes, and that a similar mistake was liable to be made by any one under the same circumstances. ALLENTOWN, Pa., July 12. — Charles Kern, of North Whitehall, Lehigh county, lies dangerously ill from effects of an attack made upon him by his dog, a large and ferocious animal, while he was returning from a field. He defended himself with a rake, but the implement powerless to ward off the infuriated beast. The dog knocked Mr, Kern down and tore ugly rents in his arms and body. One of his arms was lascerated in a frightful man- ner, the dog's h tearing the flesh, tendons and arteries. Several men ran to Kern's : dis- patched the dog 8, pitchforks and a gun. PHILADELPHIA, July 14. —Patrick Mee- han, 22 years old, an inmate of the in- sane department of the Philadelphia hospital, awakened Saturday from a sleep of four months, recognized those about him and asked for the attendant who was with him when he sank into his slumber, He came from Ireland a few years ago. He became mentally diseased, was sent to the hospital in February last, was seized with the grippe in March, the attendants found great difficulty in keeping him awake, and finally he fell into a deep sleep. from which he was not Jawakened until Sat- urday last. The last spike in the new Lehigh Valley railroad connection between the Lehigh and Behuylkill valleys was driven at Reni: mont, West Penn township, Schuylkill county, in the presence of a number of prominent officials of the Lehigh Valley railroad and invited guests.
