FARM NOTES,
CuorTing Fopper BY HAND —A
shrewd writer observes that the farmer
who continues to chop up cornstalks
and other'coarse feed by hand needn’t
wonder if his sons take a dislike to
farming and quit it for fome pleasanter
employment the first opportunity.
Many a young man leaves the farm be-
cause he has a liking for machinery,
and desire to work where he will direct
forces of steam or horse power rather
than do all with muscles. Such a
youngster is just now especially needed
on the farm. More and more is skill
with complicated mechanism needed in
the ordinary operations of the farm.
Probably in a few years a majority of
farmers will find it profitable to keep a
steam engine, to saw wood, cut fodder
and furnish power for many operations
now performed by hand, More than a
few boys have acquired a distaste for
farming by bLeing required hour after
hour to turn grindstones or swing the
revolving churn,

CREAM OANDY.--Pluce a large cup-
ful of white sugar. and three table-
spoonfuls of water 1m \ porcelain kettle
and let it boll until a drop dropped in-
to a cup of cold water will harden.
The moment it will do this add a tea-
spoonful of vanilla and one-half tea-
spoonful of eream tartar; pour into a
buttered aish, and when cool work un-
til perfectly white; cut in squares and
set away to cool,
IROWN JOE. —2 cups of indian meal,
2 cups of flour, 1 cup of molasses, 1
pint of milk, 1 teaspoonful of soda, 1
teaspoonful of salt. Steam 6 hours; to
be eaten warm as bread. Delicious
with baked beans,

fast, but where strict economy has not
to be studied there are a number of
dishes from which to make selections,
and 1t is well if possible for the house-

A PANCAER MACHINE. —A machine
interest to housewives has been iu-
vented by a man in Ilion, which thieal-
ens to revolutionize the present way of
making pancakes, The batter is plac-
ed in what may be terined a hopper on
top of the small machine, wheh is
placed on the breakfast table. When
| cakes are wanted the machine, which
| works by a spring, is set in motion, and
[the batter passes belween 1wo very
| highly-polished rollers, healed very hot
‘by a spirit amp, the cakes are thus
rolled off and cut in the required shape
by a sharp knife and thtown upon the
plate which is ready to receive them.
