Smith, wife of “Broadax” Smith, the
colored philosopher, addressed a temper-
ance meeting in Lytle opera house. She
censured the church for not doing its
duty in the late prohibition campaign
and said that had it not been for the

CENTRALIA, Pa., Jan, 28. John Hof-
fey, aged 40, residing at this place, died
from an overdose of laudanum admin-
istered by his wife. He came home in-
toxicated and in a quarrelsome mood.
His sister advised ire. Hoffey to give
him some laudan un to make him sleep,
and shortly after he was given the dose
was seized with convulsions and
died in a few hours,

The houses for several blocks around
the scene of the explosion have been
made into hospitals where many are be-
ing cared for. The scenes at the morgue
are ghastly, The remains of those
killed are cut and burned almost beyond
recognition.

The train was running at a rapid rate
and was approaching the long trestle
across Wilkerson creek when the tender
of the engine jumped the track,
The engineer reversed his en

Those who escaped uninjured busied

burning cars becume so intense that they
had to withdraw,

WixchesTer, Va, Jan. 25. —Ex-Sena
tor Riddleberger, who died yesterday

since the holidays. He was uncon
scious for three weeks, except at inter
vals. The funeral will take place this
afternoon at 8 o'clock, The interment

Harrison H, Riddleberger was born in
Edinburg, Va., Oct. 4, 1844. He served
three years in the Confederate army as
lieutenant of infantry and as captain of
cavalry. Ho was a lawyer by profes
sion. He was twice elected to the house
of delegates, und served a term as state
senator, Since 1570 he was editor of
three different newspapers. He was a
