Coughlin and Sullivan Arrested.
Daniel Coughlin, the detective, and
P. O. Sullivan, the Lake View ice dealer,
were formally arrested last night on the
charge of murdering Dr. Cronin, After
the formal reading of the warrants
Coughlin was led from his cell in the
Harrison Street station, and accom-
panied by his attorney W. 8. Forest,
was taken to the Chicago Avenue Police
station, where after brief proceedings
he was committed to the county jail
without bail.
Emphatic Denials by the Clan-na-Gael.
The statements printed yesterday that
Dr. Cronin was “removed” as a result of
a secret trial conducted by the Clan-na-
Gael organization is emphatically re-
sented by members of that organization,
Luke Dillon, of Philadelphia, who re.
resents the national body, issued a card
I the public emphasizing this fact.
A Startling Development.
CHicaGo, May 27.—The police have
been put in possession of startling facts
concerning br Cronin's murder. It has
been clearly shown by the dead man's
friends that his removal was ordered by
a committe representing the Clan-na-Gaal
society. Charges of traitorous conduct
were preferred against him at a meeting
of the Clan-na-Gael camp. He was
found guilty and his death was ordered.
Le Caron Betrayed Him.
The charge was based on the state.
ment of the British spy, Le Caron, that
there were four more spies in America,
When Le Caron made that statement on
the stand before the Parnell commission
he was ordered to give the names of the
spies. He said he dared not to do it, be-
cause if they were known they would
be murdered. Presiding Justice Han.
nen then took him into a closed ante
room and in the presence of Sir Richard
Webster, the attorney general, who is
conducting the prosecution, and Sir
Charles Russell, Parnell's attorney, Le
Caron gave the names.
Clan-pna-tiael Decreed His Death.
Within forty-eight hours after this
na-Gael camp in America had met and
passed resolutions declaring in favor of
a rigid hunt for the four spies.
Suspicion, justly or unjustly, pointed
at Dr. Cronin. A committee was ap-
pointed to try him. He was convicted
without being given a chance to make a
defense, and his assassins were brought
here from other cities to carry out the
mandate of the committee, e latter
were chosen by secret ballot.
Burned to Death,
NorroLk, Va., May 24.—The residence
of F. C. Clark, near Virginia Beach, in
Princess Anne county, was burned. He,
his only two daughters and next oldest
son and a niece visiting him wore con-
sumed by the flames. His wife, Miss
Ella Bidgood, the governess, and two
children escaped. he origin of the fire
is unknown, though it is thought to be
the work of an incendiary. Mr. Clark

tist church, and was a preacher of note,
