THE PHOHIBITION MOVEMENT.
The prohibition party is composed of
a body of moral reformers who are un-
tiring in their efforts to bring their party
and ita dootrius before the nation. Many
of its leaders are what might be styled
fanatics and are filled with great expec
tations; to make temperance the nation-
al issue, and their party one of the great
parties. Tueirinfluence is growing and
their labors bave not been in vain, Yet
it is very doubtful if they can push their
claims so far as to obtain any influence
in national affairs. The old parties are
here to stay; and will remain for many
years to come. The New York Sun very
ably sums up their standing aod possi-
bilities in the following:
A striking feature of the Prohibition
movement is the faith of its leaders in
their ultimate success. This body of re.
formers confidently affirm and appear to
believe that their party will eventoally
become dominant in both state and na
tion. The birth and growth of the Re-
publican party is a favorite theme with
the temperance orators. They liken their
movement to the incipient efforts of the
Republican leaders, and boldly assert
that it is only a question of tinre when
the same measare of success which at-
tended the Grand Old Party will also re-
ward the efforts of the cold water people.
The increase in the Prohibition vote fo
ing the last four Presidential elections
from a little more than 5,000 in 1872 to
over 150.00) in 1884, 18 pointed to with
pride as a forecast of greater gains in the
future. The Prohibitionisis are getting
aggre sive, and vigorously denounce not
only the men engaged in the liquor traf-
fic. but also those who entertain any
other method of dealing with it than
their own.
In their confident predictions these en-
thusiasts perhaps forget that side issues
have always been a prominent feature io
American politics. Movements of various
kinds, from thst of the Anti-Masonic
party of a hall century ago to those of
the Prohibitory and Labor parties of to-
dav. have always existed, only to draw a
few votes from the great parties. All
these movements have been short lived,
and none have left any permanent m-
pression upon politics, In nearly
every Presidential contest in our history
the real issue has been between to great
parties, and there 18 no immediate pros-
pect that either of these two migoty po-
litical organizations will give way to a
third. be it founded upon the problem of
labor, prohibition, or woman suffrage.
Yet the temperance army contains
good speakers and pleasaat singers, and
will serve to enliven the campaign.

INDIAN RESERVATION OPENED.
The Montana Reservation Bill having
now become a law opens for settlement
four millions acres rich farmiog lands in
the well-known and loog coveted Milk
liver Valley, also large areas of excel-
lent grazing country on the surrounding
uplands. This portion of Montana, be~
sides its agricultoral resources being rich
in minerals with an abundance of coal,
there. C. H. Warren, Gen, Pass. Agent,
St. Paul, Mion , has issued for free dis-
tribution, an excellent Map, and a pam-
phlet with other information regarding
this enuntry. Low rates are now being
made to Great Falla for those desiring to
explore this new country.

GOING WEST,
The general iaterest that has been
taken in the opening of the Montana
Indian Reservation isshown by the large
number of people who have already
gone to Great Falls to investigate the
mineral and agrienltural resources of
that wonderful country. The low ex
cursion rate announced by O. H. Warren,
Gen. Pass. Agent of the Bt Paul,
Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway,
makes the expense of exploring this
country merely nominal, and will un
doubtedly result in a still larger number
