THE QUEEN OF THE COAST.
IE OLD FASCINATION AND THE NEW AT-
LTRACTIONS OFFERED BY CAPE MAY,
om Phila, Daily Times, April 14th, 1888.]
here isa perennial youthfulness about
d Cape May which is continually tak-
jg shape in some new enterprise design-
| to add additional attractiveness to the
mous resort. In the days of old, when
je fame of Cape May stood out boldly
inst all the wor!d as the pleasure re
of the American people, popular de-
nd was pot so exacting. The wide-
hing beach, the grand surf, good ho-
and fine company gave abundant
sasnre to the hosts of vigitors who jour-
eyed thither by boat or stage or cuin-
ons family coach. They demanded no
tricions features to heighten the
tural loveliness of ocean or sky or to
d to the fascination of atmosphere. It
8 enough if they lived well and revel-
i in the beauty that surrounded them.
Later on the world seemed to revolve
hore rapidly, the visiting hos's were
hirled over the Jersey sands in hours
pstead of days. They found the same
id Cape May which their fathers and
ndfathers had known, bat the tastes
if the children had changed, They lived
pore in & day than their ancestors did in
week. They longed for newress and
sshness, snd pined for excitement.
Brest hotels were built to conform to
heir notions, Society held a summer
Sonrt on the sands; glittering equipages
plied along on the glistening beach; fes
ivals of music and song mingled their
harmony with neverceasiog music of the
saves: a great pier was projected ont in
Ro the deep, where mirth and festivity
chased away care, It was a new Cape
May evolved from the substance of the
old. :
I A striking fact in this connection 18
hat evervone who visits Cape May al-
ays returns. It may be for a day ouly
pr two «lays, vet they go back. There is
singular charm in sea and air and sorf,
which tempts the one-iime visitor to re-
new acquaintance with the pleasureful
surroundings.
The prospects for the coming season
are bright. There is more activity ip
real estate than ever known before, and?
Sethe demand for cortages and accommo
da ions foreshadow that nt only are a
large number of old admirers retarning
ors are joining the procession.
Last sammer, after hasty organization
and rapid preparation. the groands of
the Cape May Athletic Club were open-
ed. The success of the undertaking wus
econspicaous, Its organizers and patrons
embraced all the prominent residents
and property owners, aud the spectators
of the sports included everybody. This
season the hand~ome grounds will be im-
proved and a series of athletic exhib:-
gion and sports of every character ex en-
ing through the summer will be arrang
The glittering gem of this year’s acquir-
ed attractions is the race track. A very
eligible piece of ground just ontside the
ei y limits on the turnpike leadiug to the
Point has been purchased by the Cape
May Driving Park Association. A mile
and a half-mile track bss been | id out
aad built, and work on the grand stand,
club house, and stables are to be com-
menaced at an early day and pushed for-
ward to completion again the openiog
of the season. The grand stand will ac-
commodate 5000 people and the stable is
to furnish stalls for 75 to 100 horses. In
the arrangement and coustruction of
track snd buildings some novel improve-
ments wil be added.
Toe old Cape May has long borne the
palm for the beaty of its women, and it
may now win new ianrels from the pliye-
jeal strength of its mer and tue records
made on its tarf,
